Stacy Lewis ended a three-year wait for her 12th LPGA Tour title, and pledged to donate her near $200k winnings to the Houston Relief
When Stacy Lewis stated at the start of the week that she would donate her entire prize money from the Portland Classic to the Houston relief fund for flood victims, not even she could have thought she would end up winning it.
She led by three-shots heading in to the final round, but with a three-under final round of 69, Lewis was able to hold off a strong challenge from In Gee Chun to win by a single shot for her 12th LPGA Tour win.
Lewis, who lives in Houston with her husband Gerrod Chadwell (the women’s golf coach at the University of Houston), netted $195,000 for her first LPGA Tour victory since 2014.
“I’m excited to get the monkey off my back and just to know I can do it,” Lewis said.I can hit the shots when I need to and hit the putts when I need to. It’s nice to see yourself do that again.”
But while Lewis said that the win was important, she was more pleased she would be able to help people rebuild their homes.
“You know, when I said that I had the goal of winning the tournament—you got to get a lot of things right, to go your way,” Lewis said.
“Just what we’re going to be able to do, we’re going to be able to help rebuild houses and get their homes back. That’s more important than anything.”
Following her victory, Lewis’ sponsors KPMG announced that they would be matching her donanation to the fund – which Lewis said was unbelievable.
