Fantasy Golf: Portugal Masters
Last updated:
This week there is a huge amount of attention being paid to the final stage of the FedEx Cup at the Tour Championships, but there is still a lot to play for this side of the pond.
No less than 10 previous Portugal Masters winners are set to tee up this week, as Padraig Harrington will make a bid to become the first person ever to successfully defend the tournament. He hasn’t had the best results in his past few tournaments, but he might just be reinvigorated by happy memories of his past victory.

The 11th edition of the tournament is being played at the Victoria Clube de Golfe in the South of the Algarve, which was designed by Arnold Palmer and opened in 2004. Since 2007, the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course has hosted the Portugal Masters – with it’s par-five 17th signature hole being one of the most testing.
It’s a tough test of golf, and if you want to play it safe this week in your Fantasy team, you’re probably much better including more of the Tour Championship field in your side this week if we’re being honest about the whole thing. Not only is there not a cut, but given there are only 30 players in the field there is a MUCH higher chance of them finishing in a spot that gives you more points.
However, on the European Tour there are a few low fantasy priced players that could well help you reap some benefits this week.
So who should be in your Fantasy Team?
Lee Slattery: Fantasy Price £5.5m
We were seriously impressed with his 65 at the Czech Masters a couple of weeks ago in torrid conditions, and we’ve definitely got our eye on Lee Slattery. His last five events? T6-T2-T19-T9-T30.
Thorbjorn Olesen: Fantasy Price £9m
Olesen has been pretty consistent lately, although his last two victories have come in team competitions. He hasn’t missed a cut in 9 events, with his best finish being 3rd at the Open de France. Was 14th last week.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat: Fantasy Price £10m
With a top 10 last week and a T16 the week before, there’s no denying Aphibarnrat seems to have rediscovered a bit of form he’s been lacking in the second half of this season. Pricey in Fantasy Golf, but could well be up there this week.
Ryan Fox: Fantasy Price £7m
It’s been a bit of an up and down season for the World No. 103, but despite a T60 last week, he has had four top 10s in his last eight events – so he’s a pretty good bet.
Jason Scrivener: Fantasy Price £5m
Scrivener is another slightly riskier bet, but for £5m we reckon he’s worth it. He was T20 last week, but was T5 just two weeks previous – which was his third top 5 of 2017.
Andy Sullivan: Fantasy Price £12m
Sully hasn’t had a particularly pleasing season, but he does love this venue so could definitely be a factor. The 2015 Portugal Masters Champion and 2016 runner-up has missed his last two cuts in a row, but he has also had two top 10s and two top 20s in his last 10 starts – he will just be hoping to find a bit more form this week.
George Coetzee: Fantasy Price £9m
Another one with a good record here. His last four outings at Portugal have seen him end up T31 (’16), T21 (’14), T6 (’12), T3 (’11). Coetzee had had a string of missed cuts and one with-drawl in his past five events, but a T3 at the KLM Open last week shows he could have found a good spell of golf in time for an event he usually does well in.
