Hatton makes it back-to-back victories at Italian Open

Tyrrell Hatton birdied five of the last seven holes on his way to his second victory in as many weeks at the Italian Open

Hatton rolled in a 20-foot putt on the final hole to grasp a one-shot victory over Ross Fisher and Kiradech Aphibarnrat after birdieing five of his last seven holes to reach 21-under-par during a thrilling final round during the Italian Open in Monza.

Just a day after his 26th birthday. Hatton followed up his successful defense of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship title last week with his third European Tour title – putting together a barrage of birdies for victory while Ross Fisher finished behind Hatton for the second consecutive week in a row.

Overnight-leader Matt Wallace endured a difficult day, although he provided the shot of the tournament with an outstanding chip-in for birdie at the 17th before a par at the last saw him come up two shots short.

“I knew I needed a low score today, and the front nine was pretty slow and I didn’t really get any momentum,” Hatton said. “I was fighting myself, trying to stay patient and J.B, my caddie, was saying ‘good things will come”

“To win a Rolex Series event is very special. They are new for this season and all of the players look forward to playing in them. I’m just happy that I could win one of them after a poor showing in them during the summer.”

“Although I found it hard to believe, I tried to stay patient. In the end, I guess I got my reward.

“The end goal is to get as high as possible up the world rankings. Obviously the last two weeks have helped a lot.

Tommy Fleetwood could not get himself into contention, but his faultless 67 was good enough to finish five strokes ahead of Sergio Garcia and extend his lead at the top of the Race to Dubai standings.
