Expect plenty of splashes at TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole
Last updated:
TPC Sawgrass patrons will see 40 balls end up in the drink at the ‘Island Green’ 17th during this week’s Players Championship, according to spread betting company Sporting Index.
The par-3 17th hole at Sawgrass has caused nightmares for many golfers over the years and Sporting Index’s traders think this year’s Players Championship tournament will be no different.
Ed Fulton, trading spokesman for Sporting Index, said: “Island Green has seen the sport’s best competitors slip up at the Players Championship, and we’re bound to see a few more pros lose ground at the 17th hole this week by hitting water.
“Seven hundred and 11 balls have hit water on the 17th hole at Sawgrass since 2003, and we think it could be 752 by the time the tournament ends this Sunday.”
American Bob Tay currently holds the record for the highest score on the famous par-3 after finding water three times and three-putting for a final score of 12. However, not everyone has bad memories there. Just ask Will Wilcox, who became the first man to ace the hole in 14 years at the 2016 Players Championship.
Mind you, the feat wasn’t enough to stop former World No.1 Jason Day from picking up the $1.89 million winner’s cheque. The Australia memorably shot a course-record equalling nine-under-par 63 during his opening round – the best score all week – but Sporting Index has predicted this year’s lowest 72-hole total to be 64.
