The Open in Numbers: Day 3

We love crunching numbers at TG, especially when you can compare your stats with the best golfers on the planet.

So, while you may not average 334 yards off the tee this weekend or set any major championship scoring records, there’s a chance you can take pride in not being the one person we heard shout ‘mashed potato’ after a Kuchar shot.

The key numbers behind day 3 at the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale

62 The history making score posted by Branden Grace during the third round, the first ever 62 in major championship history.

13 Jordan Spieth’s major record, as he reaches his 13th round in a major with either the solo lead or co-lead – the most of anyone since 2015

43 The number of players under par during Saturday’s round out of 77, which compares to just nine players under par out of 156 on Friday

10 The number of eagles on day three, four of which came from the shortened par-four 5th hole, playing just 310 yards.

THREE is how many shots Jordan Spieth is clear at the top of the leaderboard heading in to Sunday. It’s also the number of major titles he would have if he were to hold on and win.

24 Putts recorded by Austin Connelly, who started his round birdie-eagle and finds himself in solo fourth at four-under-par

17 The number of players under par heading in to the final round of the 146th Open.

18 Shots between leader Jordan Spieth and last year’s major champion Danny Willett, who had a three-over 73 and goes in to Sunday at eight-over-par

FIVE Americans sit in the top 10 with one round left.

94 Jason Dufner’s percentage of greens in regulation, the highest of anyone this week. Dufner is currently T18 at level par.

334 Dustin Johnson’s average driving distance during round 3 as he posted a six-under 64 to get to -3 overall.

15 The easiest hole on the course during round 3. It played 536 yards and had 2 eagles, 41 birdies, 31 pars and 3 bogeys on Saturday

ZERO The amount of birdies recorded by Danny Willett, the only player on Saturday not to have at least one gain on their scorecard

12 The par-three 12th was the most difficult hole on the course in round three, yielding just 4 birdies, 58 pars, 12 bogeys and 3 doubles or worse.

69 was the average scoring round of the day, a shot less than the par 72. To be exact, it was 69.026

ONE shout of mashed potato heard out on the course. Seriously, when can that be officially stopped?

260 birdies were recorded on Saturday, with the most coming on the 15th hole (41)
