The Open in Numbers: Day 2

We love crunching numbers at TG, especially when you can compare your stats with the best golfers on the planet. So, while you may not average 316 yards off the tee this weekend, see if you can avoid shooting 47 on the back nine or running up a nine (or worse) on just one hole. But even if you don’t, you can always wallow in self pity by stopping off for a burger and chips at your local fast food outlet. As long as you pay less than a tenner, you can consider yourself to be winning at something…

79 Players will sit out the weekend after the cut fell at +5. Phil Mickelson was the highest-profile casualty alongside Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas and two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington.

TWO The number of holes that played under par on Friday. The par-4 5th had an average of 3.910, while the easiest hole on the course – the par-5 15th – produced 67 birdies and had an average score of 4.609.

£10 The cost of a burger and chips in the spectator village.

22 Putts recorded by Dustin Johnson, one less than Brooks Koepka’s total on Thursday.

SIX Bogeys in seven holes ended Phil’s challenge in what’s been his first Major without having Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay on the bag.

NINE of the 156 in the field remain under par, 26 fewer than round one.

EIGHT Shots difference between Rory’s first six holes on Thursday and Friday.

FOUR Over par – the second-round scoring average of all 156 players combined.

40 Mph gusts wrecked havoc with scores in the afternoon.

66 Best round of the day from 2015 Open champion Zach Johnson, two shots better than Rory McIlroy.

12 Eagles, including six on the 15th.

18 Strokes over par left 2004 Open champion Todd Hamilton propping up the leaderboard.

27 Bogey-free holes in a row from Ian Poulter, the highest streak of the week so far.

316 Kent Bulle’s average driving distance in yards on Friday.

31 Times 1998 champion Mark O’Meara has teed it up at the Open (the first was in 1981).

NINE The honour for the highest score on one hole went to Justin Thomas on the par-4 6th

13 Ranked as the hardest hole on Friday, averaging 4.705 and yielding 19 double bogeys or worse.

72 Percentage of greens in regulation hit by Anirban Lahiri, Chan Kim, Jason Dufner, Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson in round two.

SIX Under par – Jordan Spieth’s leading score after 36 holes, two shots ahead of Matt Kuchar.
