Fantasy Golf: Canadian Open & European Open
Last updated:
The European Tour is heading to Germany while the PGA Tour tee up in in Canada this week – so who should be on your fantasy team?
World No.1 Dustin Johnson is in Canada this week with Open runner-up Matt Kuchar, and they are joined by the likes of in-form Charley Hoffman and Ian Poulter.
Heading in the opposite direction after Royal Birkdale to the Porsche European Open, Patrick Reed and Charl Schwartzel hope to make big moves in Germany as Alex Levy attempts to defend his title and Pat Perez hopes to make his start forging a career as a global player.
So who should be on your fantasy team? We’ve narrowed it down to players of varying Fantasy Golf price ranges that you should look at this week.
RBC Canadian Open: Picks
Matt Kuchar: Fantasy Price £13m
Kuch came as close as he’s ever been to winning that elusive major on Sunday, but was beaten by an astonishing final five stretch of holes by Jordan Spieth. He’s had a brilliant season, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he bounced back with a victory this week.
Dustin Johnson: Fantasy Price £15m
DJ is still looking to regain his early season dominance of form that was cut short thanks to his fall down the stairs the night before the Masters. He slipped down the leaderboard on Sunday at The Open after a wonderful Saturday and missed his previous two cuts, but with three wins and two top 10s in 12 events in 2017 it would be silly to rule him out.
Charley Hoffman: Fantasy Price £10.5m
We don’t know why he likes the first round of a major so much, but Hoffman charged up the leaderboard once again this year on Thursday at The Open. He’s had 5 top 10s this year and his last four results read T20-T39-T8-T3, so he’s on pretty consistent form.
Graeme McDowell: Fantasy Price £9m
G-Mac didn’t quite make it in to The Open, but a week off will have done him some good. He seems to, like Poulter, refound a little bit of form after a few disappointing seasons.
Tony Finau: Fantasy Price £9m
Finau can boom it off the tee and ranks sixth on Tour in greens in regulation, giving him an excellent chance of scoring big fantasy points this week. On top of that, he has made eight cuts in a row with four Top 20s.
Ian Poulter: Fantasy Price £8m
Poults played himself out of contention at the weekend, but he’s been on brilliant form ever since he regained his tour card earlier this season and a win feels within touching distance (he came very close to victory at The Players but finished second). His last two results? 14th at Scottish Open and 9th at The Open.
Sung Kang: Fantasy Price £5.5m
Low fantasy value because of his inconsistency, but Kang has been close to victory a couple of times this year. He even creeped up the leaderboard during Saturday’s round at The Open to briefly be inside the top 10 (and ended up T44) – and we wouldn’t be surprised if he challenged this week.
Porsche European Open: Picks
Charl Schwartzel: £12.5m
Schwartzel put together yet another incredible start in a major, but as soon as he tied the lead for The Open he started to collapse. He’s had a really bizarre season, but there’s been some spectacular golf too – he’s a bit of a risky one, but we wouldn’t bet against him. In 12 events he’s had two top 5s, a top 10, missed three cuts and a WD. We’ll leave it up to you
Patrick Reed: Fantasy Price £14.5m
Captain America looked ready for a win before he missed the cut at The Open. In the 9 events previous he’d had six top 20s, a T22 and a T57. Now that he’s adjusted to the time difference we wouldn’t be surprised if he resumes that form this week for his second win on the European Tour.
Joost Luiten: Fantasy Price £10m
With the exception of the Nordea Masters, Joost Luiten hasn’t a cut all year and has been regularly within the top 20. His best result in 2017 was T7 at the Lyoness Open, but he’s a pretty solid fantasy bet thanks to his record on the European Tour and his consistency this season.
Pat Perez: Fantasy Price £8.5m
The newest member of the European Tour was a regular feature of our Fantasy set-up this year, quietly ticking us over with guaranteed points every week. He’s slightly gone off the boil with two cuts in a row, but they were both in the majors. In 17 events he’s had three top 5s and five top 20s, with three cuts and one WD
Alex Levy: Fantasy Price £8m
The defending champion already recorded a victory this year at the Volvo China Open, and that makes us think he could do well this week.
Richie Ramsay: Fantasy Price £6m
Grab him while he’s hot! Three-time European Tour winner Ramsay’s appearances in both the Scottish Open and The Open beat some of the best players in the World, and was firmly his place on the top 10 in the leaderboard until the weekend at Royal Birkdale. His last three results (T22, T35, T2) show he is ready to make a move and gain his fourth victory
