Open Championship going back to Royal St George’s

The Open Championship is going back to top Kent links Royal St George’s in 2020.

The 149th Open will be played at St George’s – the scene of Darren Clarke’s memorable 2011 success from July 16-19, 2020.

Said 2016 Ryder Cup captain Clarke: “I have so many wonderful memories from that week and will be thrilled to go back there for The Open in three years’ time.”

It is the 15th time The Open has been played at St George’s where the likes of Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Henry Cotton, Bobby Locke, Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman and surprise American victor Ben Curtis have all triumphed.

Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of the R&A, said “We are very much looking forward to the return of the Open to Royal St Georges in 2020. The Open is a true celebration of sport and the global spotlight will fall once again on Sandwich.”

“Royal St Georges has produced a series of outstanding Champion Golfers over the last 120 years and it is a thrilling prospect for golf fans to see the greatest players competing on one of the worlds finest links courses.”

Home of Golf – and the R&A – St Andrews usually holds the Open every five years but is almost certain to host the 2021 tournament to mark the 150th staging of the game’s oldest major.
