Brett Rumford Wins World Super 6 Perth

Brett Rumford was crowned the first ever ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth Champion after beating 17-year-old Phacara Khongwatmai 2&1 in the the final round of Sunday’s matchplay at Lake Karrinyup CC. 

The Australian undoubtedly outplayed most of his competitors throughout the week, and at 17-under-par he was ahead by five shots at the end of the stroke-play format, totalling the largest 54-hole lead of the season.

With a bye into the second round of Sunday’s six-hole knock-out matches, Rumford then went on to see off Japan’s Hideto Tanihara and Australian pair Wade Ormsby and Adam Bland. 

He claimed the first hole against Khongwatmai with a sublime approach shot, before immediately giving his advantage back at the next following a wayward tee shot. Another sprayed drive on the fourth put Rumford out of position, but he got up and down from the trees to go one ahead and won the match on the fifth when the teenager left a shot in the bunker and conceeded the hole. 

“It’s amazing,” he said after immediately securing his World Super 6 Perth win. “Particularly a new format, being the winner of that. It’s been a long hard fought week.” 

The new set up was just the first of two innovative competition formats that the European Tour are going to introduce this year in its bid to attract more fans to the game, and Rumford thinks that it’s a positive step.

“If it’s going to grow the game and it’s more than just a golf tournament and it becomes an event in which we’re trying to grow this sport with a bit more thrill and excitement about it, then I think as a Tour we’ve done a great job.”

This win is Rumford’s sixth European Tour victory, but for the 39-year-old Australian success comes with more than just a trophy – playing rights on the European Tour. The world no. 274 missed out on securing his card last season, and said the opportunity to now plan his year means a lot.

“It’s massive. I’ve done a lot of reflection after missing my tour card last year. I had a tough year and didn’t see my family that much, only four weeks in six months. It was a gruelling six months but I’m back and I couldn’t be happier.”

“This is pretty amazing this one. After my surgery, this is probably the biggest in terms of where I’ve come from.”
