Wacky Rewards; we decided to take a look at the weirdest trophies you can win on the pro circuits
Winning on the PGA or European Tour is the ultimate goal for any pro. A victory brings fame, fortune and a new addition to the mantelpiece. But for every Claret Jug there is a weird and wacky piece of silverware just like the beer- barrel trophy at the recent Safeway Open.
So, forget your conventional silver-plated cups and feast your eyes on these ‘creative designs’. There’s been some incredibly memorable trophies throughout the years, but this list is formed by trophies you can still win out there on Tour. The say the eye is in the beholder, but we’ll let you decide if the ‘lucky winner’ was indeed that…
1. Dubai Desert Classic (European Tour)
This is probably why Rory & other tour players hit the gym. You need muscles to lug this super-sized ‘Dallah’ (coffee-pot) Trophy Sergio Garcia won in 2017.
2. AfricaAirBank Mauritius Open
The new trophy was unveiled in 2015 and was designed by renowned sculptor and designer Hubert Privé, who created the trophy by taking inspiration from the tournament logo. It has the form of a laurel wreath, previously known as Triumphal Crown and symbolises victory. Not only is it huge, but 2017 winner Dylan Frittelli makes it looks like a weapon from Lord of the Rings.
3. Shenzhen International
Talk about a bullish prize. The design reflects how Shenzhen has become a financial hub, hence the ‘Wall Street bull’. Bernd Wiesberger won in a dramatic play-off against Tommy Fleetwood to win the title in 2017.
4. Suntory Ladies Open
Is it a pepper or banana? No, it’s actually a trophy, shaped like an elephant tusk apparently. The LPGA Japan Tour event has been played annually since 1990, and was won in 2017 by Ha-Neul Kim.
5. Swiss Seniors Open
How could the champion resist dancing the night away under this disco ball… Phil Golding was the winner of this trophy in 2017, beating Mark McNulty by a single shot at Bad Ragaz in Switzerland.
6. European Open
Flag enthusiasts will be in their element with this trophy 2017 European Tour rookie Jordan Smith took home (for his maiden win). At the very least it’s a good geography lesson.
7. LPGA HanaBank Champs
This event has a history of slightly bizarre trophies. Until 2015 it was one for party lovers, as the old trophy doubled up as a wine cooler and wooden paddle, but this new green vase was the prize from 2016.
8. Trophee Hassan II
We’re not sure bladed weapons conform to health and safety guidelines, but the winner of the Trophee Hassan II receives this decorative dagger from HRH Prince Moulay Rachid. Dangerous or what?
9. Mayakoba Classic
Even animal lovers probably wish this stone chameleon could vanish into its environment like the reptile itself. Pat Perez took the trophy home in 2016 (below), but it was Patton Kizzire’s one-shot victory over Rickie Fowler that saw him win his first PGA Tour victory at Playa Del Carmen in Mexico.
10. Manulife LPGA Classic
Is it Easter already? This egg-shaped trophy doesn’t look very edible – or that attractive. It was won in 2017 by Ariya Jutanugarn, who overcame In Gee Chun and Lexi Thompson in a play-off to claim her 6th LPGA Tour victory.
11. Qatar Masters
The ‘Golden Clam’ trophy pays homage to the days when locals had to fish for their money. Cool story, even better design. Jeunghun Wang took home this unsual trophy after defeating defeating Joakim Lagergren and Jaco Van Zyl.
12. Lyoness Open
Fancy a drink? This crystal obelisk, won by Dylan Frittelli in 2017, looks more like a posh bottle of water.
13. Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
The ‘Falcon Trophy’ is probably one of the most iconic on the European tour, and shows a falcon alighting with a golf ball. The tournament started in 2006, with England’s Tommy Fleetwood being the latest to take home the Falcon.
14. Joburg Open
The Joburg Open is a tri-sanctioned event between the European Tour, Asian Tour and Sunshine Tour – hosting the largest field of the year. With it’s sword like point at the top of it’s trophy, we recommend this year’s winner be very careful where he points it!
15. Hero World Challenge
No prizes for guessing correctly who the tournament host is here! The Tiger Woods foundation has hosted the Hero World Challenge since its conception in 1999, and the winner (this year Rickie Fowler) is rewarded with their very own Tiger to take home with them.
16. The Safeway Open
Brendan Steele took home the barrell trophy after winning the Safeway Open. Not particularly conventional in terms of a trophy, but it’s pretty handy for storing wine.
And what about the retired trophies from tournaments that no longer exist?
1. Castello Masters (European Tour): A cross between Mr Potato Head and a golfer who’s had one too many. This tournament, which was played annually from 2008-2011 and was held at the Club de Campo del Mediterráneo in Castellón, Spai.
2. Nelson Mandela Championship (European Tour): Dawie Van Der Walt of South Africa holds the trophy after winning the Nelson Mandela Championship at Mount Edgecombe Country Club on
3. Trophée Lancôme (European Tour): This was a European Tour event hosted in France from 1970 to 2003 and had notable winners such as Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Seve Ballesteros and Sergio Garcia. The photo above shows the bronze bust trophy that players took home, last won by Retief Goosen. (Picture shows 2002 winner Alex Cjeka).
4. Mallorca Classic (European Tour): This event was last contested in 2007 at Pula Golf and won by Gregory Bourdy, who got to take home this bizarre white figurine statue.
5. Ginn Championship (PGA Tour): Bernhard Langer is posing next to the large Dolphin trophy, which he won in 2008, during the second and final staging of the event.
