With the biggest win of his career, Chris Wood looks set for a Ryder Cup debut

Chris Wood’s final round 69 was enough to secure victory at the BMW PGA Championship, holding off the challenge of Rikard Karlberg, who shot a sensational 65 on a day when only six players broke 70.

“It is the biggest win of my career,” said Wood, whose previous European Tour titles came at the 2013 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and 2015 Lyoness Open. “I have always wanted to win the tournament and to win with my family here is amazing.”

28-year-old Wood started the day three shots behind overnight leader Scott Hend, but Hend blew himself out of contention with an error-strewn 78.

Wood, meanwhile, blitzed the front-nine in 29 shots, matching the tournament record set by Danny Willett on Friday.

Chris Wood tamed a challenging Wentworth

“I can’t fault a shot that I hit today,” he said. “When you are making lots of birdies on a tricky day, you know you are going to be there or thereabouts.”

The win will put Wood inside the top-25 in the world and give his hopes of making the Ryder Cup team a major boost.

“To play the way I did today is really encouraging,” said Wood, who has never appeared in the Ryder Cup. “I knew events like this were key to making the Ryder Cup team. It’s a huge step towards that.”
