Who is Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston?

Henrik Stenson may have lfited the Claret Jug but Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston emerged as one of the stars of this year’s Open Championship.

The 27-year-old from Barnet became a firm fans favourite at Royal Troon and here are some things you might not know about the Beef.

1. The origins of his nickname

Johnston decided to grow his hair while at school and when it started to grow curly a friend told him that his head looked like a big bit of beef and the name stuck.

Earlier this year, at Wentworth Johnston had his car parking space sign changed to ‘Beef’.

2. Teeing off with a burger…

Early in July Johnston was challenged to swap a golf ball for a cheeseburger by a spectator and one of his catchphrases, a basket of burgers, not balls, was born.

3. Caesar salad

‘Beef’ told journalists that he was going to have a Caesar salad for super which promoted a fan to scream ‘Caesar salad’ at him for six holes the following day.

His five-year-old niece, Summer, followed him round the course shouting ‘Uncle Beef’.

4. Filet Mignon wedge

Johnston’s wedge has the words ribeye, brisket, sirloin, T-Bone and Filet Mignon engraved on it… feeling hungry yet?

5. Gooner

Well someone has to be! Yes Johnston is an Arsenal fan and he recently played with childhood icon, Ray Parlour, in a Pro-Am event.
