10 – 18
10TH SANDHILLS Par 4, 452 yards
A blind tee shot to a sloping right-to-left fairway, flanked by gorse on the right and a gully on the left. The approach is played into a raised and undulating green with a 10ft drop to the right. 2004 average: 4.30 (3)
11TH THE RAILWAY Par 4, 483 yards
Another tight drive with OB running down the right and thick gorse on the left. A long iron off the tee will leave a lengthy second into a green which is guarded by a small slope and a bunker in front. 2004 average: 4.41 (1)
12TH THE FOX Par 4, 429 yards
A slight dog-leg which plays over a rise to a small landing area off the tee. Gorse awaits those looking to cut the corner, with thick rough left. Small, two-tier green is protected by a sharp bank to the left. 2004 average: 4.31 (2)
13TH BURMAH Par 4, 473 yards
Another lengthy par 4 which calls for a driver off the tee. The second is to an elevated green, usually into a left-to-right breeze, with a sharp drop off to the left. A good bail out area is short and right. 2004 average: 4.15 (9)
14TH ALTON Par 3, 178 yards
A straightforward par 3 which yields plenty of birdies. The green has a narrow neck at the front, so a back pin is ideal to take the two front bunkers out of play. 2004 average: 3.10 (12)
15TH CROSBIE Par 4, 502 yards
A brand new hole for this year’s Open. The tee shot should favour the left side to open up the approach to one of the fl atter greens on the course. Hitting short right will also feed down towards the hole. 2004 average: 4.28 (4)
16TH WELL Par 5, 553 yards
The last of the par 5s is reachable in two. The safe option off the tee is just short of the water, 240 yards from the green. Lay-ups should favour the left side to help take the bunkers out of play. 2004 average: 4.74 (18)
17TH RABBIT Par 3, 218 yards
The longest par 3 on the course. Club choice can vary from mid-irons to woods, depending on the wind. The plateaued green sits like a tabletop and falls away sharply on both sides. 2004 average: 3.22 (6)
18TH CRAIGEND Par 3, 464 yards
Grandstands could block or impede a wayward drive. Short of the bunker on the right is ideal, leaving a wedge into a 40-yard green which is guarded either side. Long brings OB into play. 2004 average: 4.20 (7)
