Alex Noren says his fifth European Tour win is “by far the biggest”

Having led from Friday evening, Sweden’s Alexander Noren shot a two-under-par 70 on the final day of the Scottish Open to secure a one-shot victory over England’s Tyrrell Hatton.

“This is by far the biggest win,” said the 33-year-old, who turns 34 on Tuesday. “The amount of players that are here, and on a course like this in Scotland, it’s only what I dreamt of growing up.”

Noren made just four bogeys across the week on his way to a 14-under total, but couldn’t relax until the win was signed and sealed.

“Now I’m just so happy it’s over because it was a tough, tough leaderboard,” added Noren. “There were a lot of guys at 11, 12, 13 under and it was just not a cruising win at all. Thinking about it this morning, how much it would mean, it feels like miles away. And now when it happens, it just feels unbelievable. I’ll just try to enjoy this. I know how tough this game is and I’m just really happy to get a win.”

Hatton’s weekend rounds of 66 and 69 put him in contention but in the end were not quite enough to catch Noren.

“I’m really happy with that result,” said the 24-year-old. “Part of me is slightly disappointed in a way, finishing one short. But I played well. I tried to stay as patient as I can and I find that one of the difficult aspects. But I’m just quite happy I guess.”

Hatton’s performance earns him a spot at next week’s Open at Royal Troon. He has missed the cut in all four of his previous appearances.

“A spot in the Open next week, as well as securing the US PGA Championship in a few weeks’ time, as well. Overall, it’s been a really good week.”
