Rory McIlroy is out of the Olympics

Rory McIlroy has announced that he will not be competing in the Olympics in Rio this year, due to concerns about the Zika virus.

“After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero,” said McIlroy.

“After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realise that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else.

“Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.

“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision. The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me.

“I will continue to endeavour to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.”

McIlroy’s decision is a further blow for Olympic golf, which has already seen major winners Adam Scott, Vijay Singh, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel rule themselves out. World number one Jason Day is rumoured to be preparing to rule himself out, although he is yet to make an official statement.

The couple are engaged and plan to start a family

27-year-old McIlroy got engaged to Erica Stoll last year and has spoken of their plans to start a family. The Zika virus rarely causes serious harm to adults, but can cause crippling birth defects if contracted by pregnant women.

The Olympic committee of Ireland says it is “extremely disappointed” by the decision, but understands McIlroy’s reasoning. “As we have always said, it is down to the individual and of course we respect his decision, which he has taken for personal reasons.”

McIlroy’s withdrawal is good news for Graeme McDowell, who is most likely to join Shane Lowry on Team Ireland. At least it would be good news if McDowell hadn’t already expressed his disinterest in the event.

“I’ll be more interested in making the Ryder Cup team, to be honest with you,” he said.
