Henrik Stenson has 10 European Tour wins after victory at the BMW International Open

Henrik Stenson had to play 36 holes in one day after rain delays affected the BMW International Open in Germany, but the experienced Swede wasn’t fazed, shooting a 67 in the morning and following it with an afternoon 71 to win by three shots.
40-year-old Stenson’s performance was even more impressive considering it came just a week after injury forced him to withdraw from the U.S. Open.
“It was hairy all the way,” said Stenson. “It was a tough one. I had to dig deep to come back. I didn’t play well on the front nine, made a couple of mistakes, got caught out by the wind a few times and missed one or two putts I should have made as well.
“I felt like I was starting to make a bit of a mess of it and then I came back and made the birdies on the par fives. I made some good putts closing out.”
The victory is Stenson’s tenth on the European Tour, drawing him level with Bernard Gallacher, Graham Marsh, Graeme McDowell, Adam Scott and Jack Nicklaus.
“I really feel like I played well in 2015 and I just couldn’t get a trophy,” added Stenson. “It was a bit hard at times but you’ve just got to keep on trying and put yourself in position. I did that once again and this time I managed to go all the way.”
The win was Stenson’s fifth top-six finish in eight starts on the European Tour this season, and moved him up to fifth in the world, behind Rory McIlroy who has 13 European Tour victories to his name. They both have a long way to go to catch Seve Ballesteros, who racked up 50 European Tour wins across a 20-year period.
