Ariya Jutanugarn proves you don’t even need a driver to win a tournament

We’ve all had rounds where the driver has let us down and meant we’ve had no chance of winning, no matter how well the rest of the game is working.

But have you ever thought of ditching the driver completely?

It might seem like an extreme solution, but it worked for world number 10 Ariya Jutanugarn at the Volvik Championship.

The longest club in 20-year-old Jutanugarn’s bag for the week was her TaylorMade AeroBurner 3-wood. She used that or one of three utility irons off the tee on her way to a five-shot victory.

“I mean, when I see the course, I just feel like it’s really hard for me because I can’t hit my driver and I really have to have a good game plan,” said Jutanugarn. “So to be honest, first time I see it, I think this course is hard and I don’t think I’m going to win, I just really want to do my best.”

It’s not the first time Jutanugarn has gone through a tournament without hitting a driver, and it clearly works for her – the win was her third successive victory.

So, if your driver is doing you more harm than good, maybe it’s time to take it out of the bag completely.
