Thrilling 3rd round in store at The Open tomorrow

It promises to be a super Sunday and momentous Monday at St Andrews.

After the loss of nearly a full day’s play today, the scene is at least now set for a thrilling conclusion to the 144th Open Championship.

The weather picture is looking a lot brighter from now on in and though showers are expected tomorrow, at least the fierce winds won’t be around to cause havoc and utter mayhem again.

And by hook or by crook we’ve got a fantastic looking leaderboard, sprinkled with superstars and former major winners, old hands and promising young guns – England’s Danny Willett has been firing on all cylinders thus far.

Tomorrow should be an absolute humdinger….

Dustin Johnson may be leading the way at the moment but there are so many top players tucked in beyond and posing a threat and right among them is Scottish pair Paul Lawrie and Marc Warren and his namesake Zach Johnson, the former Masters champion.

Aussie duo Jason Day (pictured), who will surely land a major one day, and Adam Scott, who let the Claret Jug slip from his grasp at Lytham three years ago, are also very much in the hunt as is double US Open champion Retief Goosen and 2010 St Andrews winner Louis Oosthuizen.

It’s like the Lottery trying to pick a winner from one of them, or indeed from a whole bunch of players within striking distance including England’s Justin Rose and Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia who birdied the last two holes to finish at -5 – just five adrift of Johnson.

Like seasoned pro Paul Lawrie pointed out, it’s only the halfway stage and anything can happen yet. And it probably will but whatever happens there should be plenty of fireworks on show even though plenty of big guns – Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Darren Clarke and Ian Poulter – have been silenced and haven’t made the projected level par cut.

The pick of tomorrow’s 3rd round matches are as follows: 1.30 – Jordan Spieth -5 & Sergio Garcia -5; 1.40 – Charl Schwartzel -5 & Justin Rose -5; 2.10 – Luke Donald -6 & Retief Goosen -6; 2.20 – Paul Dunne (Amat) -6 & Louis Oosthuizen -7; 2.30 – Jason Day -7 & Robert Streb -7; 2.40 – Adam Scott -7 & Zach Johnson -7; 2.50 – Marc Warren -7 & Paul Lawrie -8; 34pm – Danny Willett -9 & Dustin Johnson -10.
