More play-off agony for Louis Oosthuizen

Plucky South African Louis Oosthuizen made a game Open title defence – he won at the Old Course five years ago – but in the end there was more play-off heartbreak.

Beaten by Bubba Watson in the Masters play-off in 2012, it was again a case of so-near-but-so-far for Oosthuizen who nevertheless is pleased with his overall performance.

“I did really well to get in playoff, and just had four three putts today…quite lengthy ones. I putted beautifully all week, made great putts to make the playoff and just misread the two in the playoff so there’s not much more I could have done
“The front 9 was crucial and I only went through in 2 under and the back nine showed its teeth and it was difficult to make birdies out there.
“It’s never nice to lose a playoff and of course I had the experience in 2012 at Augusta. I’ll take a lot out of this week, I was really motivated to win, I love this place so can’t wait for it to come back here again.
“I did really well at Chambers Bay after a 77 first round. Today I felt like I was on the back foot all day, two behind the leaders on 12 and it was tough to make birdies out there.  So I take a lot from pulling off the shot I did to make the playoff. I was just outplayed in the playoff.
“I had -16 in my head and that was the number I should have got to! This was one of the most exciting Opens and I definitely hope it will be that way in the future. A lot of guys will take a lot from this week and if it keeps on like this it’s great for golf.”
