The Open Championship 2024: Key stats from Moving Day at Royal Troon

With play concluded on day three of The Open Championship, we pick out the key stats and review where each player gained and lost at Royal Troon.

After three rounds of The Open at Royal Troon, there are only nine players under par, the lowest at this point since 2013 at Muirfield when there were only three players under par. Thriston Lawrence and Sam Burns, who both started the day at three-over-par (T28), shot 65 in the third round for the best rounds of the day, finishing just one shot behind 54-hole leader Billy Horschel.

Stroke averages

The stroke average for the third round was 72.438. Cumulatively for the third round, the field was 115-over-par, and after 54 holes are 1172-over-par. The back nine (36.888) played harder than the front nine (35.550) for the first time this week.

Harest & easiest holes

The hardest hole of the third round was the 11th with a stroke average of 4.662. There were two
birdies (Thriston Lawrence and Sam Burns), 39 pars, 30 bogeys, four double-bogeys, and five
others, including a 9 for Joaquin Niemann. The six hardest holes for the third round were all on the back nine. In order they were the 11th, 15th, 17th, 10th, 13th and 12th.

The easiest hole of the day was the par-5 4th with a stroke average of 4.800. There were 28 birdies, 42
pars, eight bogeys, and one double-bogey (Emiliano Grillo). In total eight holes played under par.

Silver Medal race

Calum Scott, Jacob Skov Olesen, Tommy Morrison, and Luis Masaveu will battle for the Silver Medal in the final round. The Silver Medal is awarded to the leading amateur(s) to make the cut on completion of 72 holes.

Fairways & greens in regulation

Scottie Scheffler was the most accurate off the tee in the third round with 13 of 14 fairways hit, while Russell Henley hit 16 of the 18 greens in regulation to lead the approach statistics.

Bogey-free rounds

Only Ewen Ferguson managed a bogey-free round in the third round. Ferguson had a birdie at the
4th and 17 pars.

Record-breaking Ace

Si Woo Kim’s hole-in-one at the 238-yard 17th hole is the longest since records have been kept in 1981. The Korean’s 3-iron pitched just short of the green before making a beeline for the flag.

Strokes Gained

Sam Burns produced a stellar round of 65 in challenging conditions at The Open on Saturday, shooting six birdies to top the Strokes Gained leaderboard (+6.643). South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence who matched Burns’ six-under-par scorecard gained +5.572 strokes, while Russell Henley gained +5.379 strokes on the field.

Scotland’s Calum Scott, the 54-hole low amateur and favorite for the Silver Medal topped the driving distance leaderboard on day three, averaging 329.4 yards. Only 20 players in the field managed to average above 300 yards.
