Queues, luck for the reigning champion, and ‘carnage’ at the postage stamp:  Things you missed from Sunday at The 2024 Open Championship

We’re on the ground at the Open Championship bringing you all the action from the final day where the 2024 Champion Golfer of the year will lift the Claret Jug.

Here’s a rundown of everything you missed from Sunday’s Open Championship action at Royal Troon.

Sunday pin ‘carnage’

Pin positions for the final day at Royal Troon are looking very ‘Sunday’ style, according to Ryan Fox. Speaking to Sky Sports after his final round, where he shot a 4-under 67, he said “There is going to be some carnage later on the postage stamp! The pins are super tight around the course and are surrounded by some horrible slopes.”

Looks like we’re in for an exciting day!

Greg Norman takes a selfie playing at Trump Turnberry

The Shark attacks Turnberry

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman played Trump Turnberry on Saturday afternoon, alongside golf professional and content creator Rick Shiels (maybe he’s LIV Golf’s next signing?). Norman had been at Royal Troon earlier in the day to watch the action, after accepting an invite to the tournament two years after he was denied an invite to the 150th Champions Dinner in St Andrews.

Luck for the reigning Champion

2023 Open Champion Brian Harman got lucky on the 3rd hole this afternoon, as his ball narrowly avoided a hazard when it ran to the end of the fairway, over a footbridge and nestled in the rough on the other side of the burn.

Bracing for the cold

Scotland’s highest finisher Ewen Ferguson showed the crowd just how chilly the winds were today, wearing a snood out on the course. Although one rather tipsy spectator shouted “he’s wearing a f**cking neck brace” as he walked up the 16th fairway.

The queue for the 18th grandstand on the final day of the 2024 Open Championship

A long wait

The queue to sit in the grandstand at the 18th hole began building up while the leaders were only on the 6th green. I think they’ll be waiting a long time, as I don’t think many people will be giving up their seats to watch the 2024 Open Champion receive the Claret Jug this evening.

Iam Poulter wearing bright checked trousers at Wentworth

I’m missing the Union Jacks

Standing watching players come up the 16th hole, I looked around at the spectators surrounding the green, and noticed one solitary man wearing bright blue and white checked trousers amongst a sea of bland black and beige colors. It made me think of Ian Poulter and his loud dress sense, and how fans would turn up in Union Jack trousers to show their support for the Englishman. Looking at the crowd today, it was clear that since Poulter joined breakaway tour LIV Golf, spectator dress sense is definitely more sedate than it used to be.

Two’s company

Left-handers Robert MacIntrye and Phil Mickelson were paired together on the final day of the tournament. Incase you wanted to know, there was a 4% chance of this happening on the final day, after the field was cut on Friday night. They were both excited to play together, with McIntyre commenting Phil was his childhood hero.

Balmy or barmy?

Sunday was a warmer and drier day at Royal Troon, but not balmy enough to make a dip in the Firth of Clyde seem overly tempting. It’s one way to show your level of support for fan favorite, Justin Rose, though.

Topgolf for Scottie

Two-time Major Champion, Scottie Scheffler, was in prime position at the start of the final day at the 152nd Open Championship being just two strokes off the lead. On the ninth green Scottie all but putt himself out of contention with a 3-putt from 9ft.

The World No.1 stood on the 18th tee six strokes off the lead when he hit a golf shot none of us knew he was capable of – a stone-cold top that didn’t make it past the red tees. *Insert Leonardo Di Caprio meme*

Color my luck

Color my luck

Justin Rose rocked up for his final round wearing the same color he donned on his Open Championship debut as an amateur in 1998 and when he won the FedEx Cup. Coincidence? The Englishman says yes.

“I’ve worn blue all week because a lot of my wet suit stuff has been blue, sweaters have been blue. I thought, okay, I’m bored of blue, and this was literally the only color available.”

Xander Schauffele raises the claret jug after his Open win at Royal Troon

YouTube Inspiration

“Hearing your name called with ‘Open Champion’ right after it is something I’ve dreamt of for a very long time,” said Schauffele. “Walking up the 18th, with the big yellow leaderboards, gave me chills.” Xander told the media after his win at Royal Troon.

“I actually watched the highlights of Phil and Henrik [the pair put on an epic duel in the Open’s last visit to Royal Troon, in 2016] to motivate myself for this week – I guess that paid off.”
