These eight players will make Masters history this week
Last updated:

We like records being broken here at TG Towers – and the more obscure the better…
A rather peculiar Masters record will be broken at Augusta National this week as eight left-handed golfers tee up in the 89th battle for the Green Jacket.
That number – which makes up 8.4% of the field – will break the previous best of six, which occurred on two occasions, in 2008 and 2018.
But before we meet this week’s record makers…
A brief history of left-handers at the Masters
The first portsider to play in the Masters was Gene Ferrell in 1956, though he ended up being disqualified in the first round.
Since then, notable lefties to tee up at Augusta include Sam Adams, Ernie Gonzales, Ralph Howe III, Russ Cochran, Greg Chalmers, Nick O’Hern, Richard Green, Brad Benjamin, Yuxin Lin, Ted Potter Jr and Garrick Higgo.

And the eight record breakers this year are…
Akshay Bhatia: Playing in his second Masters after a T35 last year. Was also the first golfer to compete in the Drive, Chip & Putt and the tournament proper.
Brian Harman: Coming here on the back of a fourth PGA Tour win at the Valero Texas Open, the 2023 Open champion’s Masters record reads four missed cuts from six starts.
Joe Highsmith: Won the Cognizant Classic at PGA National to book his Masters debut this week.
Robert MacIntyre: The Scot has missed the last two Masters after finishing T12 and T23 in his only visits to date. His game is on another level now, though, and is the top-ranked lefty in our Masters Power Rankings.
Matt McCarty: Won the inaugural Black Desert Championship in November to earn a Masters debut this week.
Phil Mickelson: Not only the most decorated left-hander in Masters history, but golf history, too. So much so that he has taken ownership of the nickname ‘Lefty’. Three of Mickelson’s six major championships have been here at Augusta.
Bubba Watson: The most recent left-handed Masters champion, Watson won it in both 2012 and 2014 and is one of just 18 players with multiple Green Jackets.
Mike Weir: The first ever left-handed Masters champion in 2003 and sparked a run of six winners in 11 years. The Canadian has only made a weekend twice in the last 15 years.
