10 big names who missed the cut at The Masters – including one pre-tournament favorite

A host of past champions and PGA Tour winners are heading home early from Augusta National.

We are 36 holes in at the Masters, which can only mean one thing… it’s time for some heartbreak. The cut fell at two under par and sent 42 players home early from the 95-man field, ending their hopes of slipping on the Green Jacket for another year at least.

The Masters cut is more brutal than weekly PGA Tour events, with only the top 50 players and ties getting through. Among those chopped were some of the game’s biggest stars, including past Masters champions, Major winners, Ryder Cup players, and five LIV Golf representatives.

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka was the biggest name to miss the weekend, though the absence of all five amateurs was also notable because it means the Silver Cup will not be awarded on Sunday for the first time since 2022.

Perhaps the least surprising player to miss the cut was Nick Dunlap, who opened the tournament with one of the worst scores in Masters history after carding an 18-over-par 90. The American improved on his Thursday horror show with a laudable one-under 71, but is still yet to play the weekend in a Major in six starts.

Who were the biggest names to miss the cut at The Masters 2025?

Bernhard Langer 74-73 (+3)

At 67 years of age, Langer is old enough to be Scottie Scheffler’s grandfather. This week he’s been giving up 40 yards off the tee versus the field average and despite it all, he came so close to making the cut on his 41st and final appearance at Augusta.

He was two under for the day, level par overall, by the time he got to the par-5 15th, which is when everything started to unravel. A double bogey there after hitting in the water left him with no wriggle room coming down the last, and it proved pivotal as he failed to get up and down despite 40,000 patrons and Chairman Fred Ridley willing him on.

Dustin Johnson: 74-73 (+3)

Father time catches up with us all and DJ is nearing that stage where he’s almost making up the numbers in major championships. His form has fallen off a cliff since he topped the individual standings in LIV’s inaugural season in 2023, so it was no great surprise to see him relegated to mid-card status this week. A bogey-double bogey finish ultimately pushed him outside the cutline for the fourth time in his last six major championship starts.

Dustin Johnson has struggled for form since 2023.

Sergio Garcia: 72-76 (+4)

Sorry, Sergio, but anyone who turns up for the first round looking like Roger McDonald doesn’t deserve to make it through to the weekend. He had high hopes after winning LIV Golf Hong Kong last month, but familiar failings with his putting (he lost 2.6 strokes versus the rest of the field in round two) meant his 100th major championship start ended early for the sixth time in his last seven visits to Augusta.

Brooks Koepka: 74-75 (+5)

There are final-hole meltdowns and then there’s what Koepka did to complete his second round. Sitting inside the cutline on +1 after a timely eagle on the 15th, he lost his tee shot in the trees, overshot his approach into the green, and then three-putted from 12ft to close with a quadruple-bogey eight.

At least there was that hole-in-one during the Par-3 Contest…

Brooks Koepka missed the cut for the third time in his last five visits to Augusta National.

Phil Mickelson: 75-74 (+5)

The three-time Masters champ looked good until he found Rae’s Creek late on Friday. It’s only the fourth time Lefty has missed the cut in 32 Masters starts – and the first since 2016. Legend.

Sepp Straka: 78-71 (+5)

Maybe Straka and Koepka should compare notes because they both made a hash of 18 and missed the weekend because of it. Straka was five under for his round heading to the 17th tee and then threw in a bogey there, before walking off 18 with a triple bogey seven after hitting the worst tee shot we’ve seen all week.

Adam Scott: 77-72 (+5)

All the damage was done for Scott in the first round when he hit nine greens in regulation en-route to a five-over 77. A missed cut, his first at Augusta since 2009, has now extended his winless run to 109 events, which is quite something for a former World No.1 with a Green Jacket already tucked away in his locker.

Cameron Smith: 71-78 (+5)

The man with the best mullet in golf won the best dressed award after turning up for Wednesday’s practice round in a blazer, so it was always going to be hard to top that. Still, he was going along nicely at one stage before he got bit by Amen Corner. A double on 11 and bogeys on 13, 16 and 17 sent him packing early.

Nicolai Hojgaard: 76-74 (+6)

Four consecutive missed cuts tells you everything you need to know about where Nicolai’s game is right now. He made three double bogeys yesterday and was unable to get anything going in the second round while his brother Rasmus stormed up the leaderboard with a five-round 67 on his Masters debut. That part will probably sting a little as well.

Robert MacIntyre: 75-75 (+6)

The Scot found the water twice on Friday and cursed his “abysmal” putting as he missed the weekend at the Masters for the first time.
