Rick Shiels to LIV Golf? The YouTube star has (finally) revealed all!
Last updated:
The Rick Shiels LIV Golf rumors have been swirling for weeks. And now the cat’s out of the bag…
When you run golf’s biggest YouTube channel and your name is on our sport’s most popular podcast in the UK, it will take something huge to make you turn your back on that.
Shiels released two teaser videos in the weeks running up to the announcement. One titled “The new era” and another called “The next chapter”.
Fans have been, perhaps understandably, standoffish. He has, after all, history for this. (Who can forget the last time this happened and it turned out to be a merch release?)
But, as my colleague Rob McGarr pointed out, Shiels is incredibly media savvy with a huge team of like-minded staff. “I don’t think they’d do this campaign and expect people to be delighted if the big reveal was the launch of some ‘RS’-branded golf socks,” he wrote in his piece covering the speculation.
In that, you’ll find a few people were suggesting that Rick Shiels was joining LIV Golf – with one even suggesting he would “bet my house on it”.
Well, if he had, he would now have two houses. (Is that how betting works?)
Indeed, Shiels has confirmed he will be signing for the Saudi-funded league.
In the 13-minute video, Shiels says that he has signed with LIV Golf to be “an official ambassador and content creator” before confirming that does not mean he will be playing in LIV events.
Here’s what he has to say on the matter…
Rick Shiels LIV Golf announcement:
As part of the deal, Shiels says he will be bringing his popular “Break 75” series back, filming at each of LIV’s 14 venues through the season with, he promises, “special guests”.
He will also be taking on LIV’s stars in his 10-Shot Challenge, where he starts at 10-under par and attempts to beat the tour’s best over 18 holes.
There will also be a Five-Man Scramble series, which will see Shiels join each LIV team to see how low they can score over a six-hole stretch of two par-3 holes, two par-4 holes, and two par-5 holes.
And finally, Shiels will host a bracket tournament of two-on-two matches with each team.
“Partnering with LIV Golf provides an incredible opportunity to take my content to the next level,” Shiels, who also confirmed he will continue with his coaching videos and podcast, said in a statement. “From playing with some of the best golfers in the world to showcasing their courses and teams, I can’t wait to share this journey with my audience. Together, we’re bringing fans closer to the action and showing the world a new side of golf.”
Shiels will also launch TotShots – a recreational golf initiative designed to introduce children aged three to five to golf using engaging games and activities – to which LIV Golf will contribute $50,000 annually.
