Thorbjorn Olesen charged with sexual assault, suspended by European Tour

Thorbjorn Olesen has been charged with sexual assault and suspended from the European Tour after an incident on a BA flight from Nashville to London last week

Ryder Cup star Thorbjorn Olesen has been charged with sexual assault, being drunk on an aircraft and common assault after he was arrested for an incident on his return flight from Nashville to London Heathrow last Monday.

The Danish golfer, who was travelling back to London after finishing T27 at the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational in Memphis, was accused of molesting a woman and urinating in the aisle, as well as failing to comply with the orders of cabin crew on the BA flight.

He was originally met by police at the airport and released under investigation, but has now been charged by ‘postal requisition’.

He will appear at Uxbridge magistrates court on August 21.

“A man has been charged in connection with an incident on an inbound flight to Heathrow Airport on Monday, 29 July . . . Jacob Thorbjorn Olesen, 29, of Redcliffe Road, Kensington and Chelsea, was charged by postal requisition on Thursday, 1 August with sexual assault, being drunk on an aircraft and common assault,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said.

According to a witness that spoke to The Sun about the incident, Olesen had “started abusing some of the passengers and crew and then made a pass at one of the female passengers before taking a leak in the aisle.

“It was shocking behaviour. You would expect it maybe on a budget airline but not in the first-class cabin on BA.’’

As a result of the charge, he has also been suspended from the European Tour.

A spokesperson for the European Tour said “Thorbjørn Olesen has been suspended from the European Tour pending the outcome of legal proceedings. As this remains an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to make any further comment at this time.”

“As it remains a pending case, we currently have no further comment.”

On Monday Olesen’s lawyer, Paul Morris, said: “Thorbjørn has cooperated fully with the police during their investigation but, while the legal proceedings are still ongoing, he unfortunately cannot comment on this matter at this time.”
