Editor’s Welcome

I have a love-hate relationship with putting. Some days I feel like I can hole anything; my stroke feels rock solid, I’m not worried by six-footers and my lag putting is pretty good. Other days, it’s like I’m holding an eel rather than a golf club. The head moves more than a nodding dog on the parcel shelf of a car, and my consistency is… non-existent. I had one of those days in January, when I was lucky enough to play Isleworth in Florida (Tiger’s former home course) with Galvin Green. I believe (I may be wrong as I’ve tried to erase the memory) that I four-putted five times that day, including one four-jab from 10 feet… I had more than 40 putts.

Thankfully, I’ve learned quite a lot after reading this month’s putting A to Z – it’s jam-packed with useful advice about the clubs, about green reading, the fundamental of the putting stroke and building confidence, plus tips from Mr One Putt himself, Ken Brown (below).

I think one of the best feelings in golf is smashing a drive straight down the middle. But when I look back on good rounds, it’s the putts I’ve holed that have been the key to a good score… The Monday after this year’s Masters, a builder who’s doing some work on my house noticed my TG polo as I answered the door. “Don’t usually watch golf,” he said. “But that Tiger Woods last night… couldn’t turn away. My 12-year old was watching too because it wasn’t on late, and he’s asked for some golf clubs. Says he wants to give it a go…”

I well remember Tiger’s first Masters win in 1997, which was transformational for golf. I wonder what impact this new Tiger will have on the game? It can only be positive, and I can’t wait to find out.

GEAR TESTS

Golfers can be quite picky when it comes to their most lofted clubs, so we’ve put old vs new wedges up against each other in the first of this month’s tests to find out how a brand new Cleveland RtX 4 compares to a five-year-old 588 RtX 2.0

In our second test, its the battle of the most popular Tour balls. When the pros teed off  for the  first round of The Masters, the world’s top three players – Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy – all played a TaylorMade TP5 or TP5x ball – but Titleist still dominates for the majority. So given that they have both launched new balls for 2019, now seemed like the perfect time to put them head-to-head.

TG Columnists

Both Andrew Cotter and Nick Dougherty had reason to reflect after Tiger’s 15th major title at Augusta. For Nick, it made his first time presenting at the tournament a memory he and his children will never forget, while Andrew used the opportunity to reflect on two other major champions he spotted at the event: David Duval and Ian Baker-Finch. Both are reads you don’t want to skip.
