Soccer superstars ready to kick-off in Belfry golf event
Last updated:
Some of the greatest names in world football will swop their boots for spikes at The Belfry in a Ryder Cup-style tournament this weekend.
Legendary players past and present including World Cup stars, Premier League giants and former European Cup winners will do battle from Friday to Sunday.
It’s England versus Rest of the World and leading the teams will be respective captains Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke.
A who’s who of footballing greats from throughout the world including Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Dutchman Ronald De Boer, Welsh wizard Ryan Giggs, Italian striker Alessandro Del Piero and Argentinian Gabriel Batistuta will face English stars including Manchester United’s Michael Carrick, Andy Cole and Paul Scholes, Liverpool legends Robbie Fowler, James Milner and Everton’s Phil Jagielka.
And while the competitiveness of the players involved and the strength of the competition will ensure spectators have more than enough to keep them entertained, there will also be a host of entertainment zones around the course from children’s play areas to meet and greet stations and even VIP champagne tents and barbeques.
The three day event has been brought to the Belfry – four times home of the Ryder Cup, by Chester-based Iconiqe who first devised the concept of high quality golf tournaments for sporting greats out in Las Vegas.
The company founded by Tom Brookes was asked by the famous MGM resorts in Vegas to create an entertainment concept for major sporting celebrities at their exclusive Shadow Creek course.
The star-studded event is expected to attract large galleries with fans turning up in their droves to see their heroes hit some great – and some not-so-great – shots!
A memorable weekend will be rounded-off with a glittering gala dinner on the Sunday night at the VOC Centre, Resorts’ World.
Live music will be provided by two iconic 80s music artists in Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet and Paul Carrack from Mike and the Mechanics.
Tom Brookes said: “There is something for everyone throughout the weekend from Hospitality to a Pro Am tournament on the Friday when corporates and sponsors can play alongside the big name players.
“We have Capital FM star Marvin Humes DJing over the weekend in our VIP areas where guests can enjoy a cold glass of Moët in one of our champagne tents.”
Admission for the tournament itself is free for under 12’s and start from £5 for children per day and £18 for an adult. Weekend prices are discounted whilst VIP packages are £270. Separate tickets for the ‘all-inclusive’ Gala Dinner on Sunday night including dinner and entertainment are priced at £199.
A share of proceeds from the event will be split between three charities – Special Effect, The Bluebell Hospice and regional charity Smile for Joel, set up last year in memory of football referee Joel Richards who died along with his uncle and grandfather in the Tunisia terror attack of 2015.
