Scotland’s best golf holes revealed

The 18th hole at the Old Course, St Andrews, has been voted the best golf hole in Scotland by a poll that surveyed nearly 3000 golfers.

The Tom Morris hole, which plays back towards the R&A clubhouse with the town on the right and the west sands on its left, had a 27% share of the 799 votes cast.

The finishing hole on the Old Course topped two categories voted for, picking up both best golf hole and best finishing hole – while the 17th was chosen as the the best par four in Scotland with 36% of 1176 votes.

Kingsbarns, which will play host to the Women’s British Open this year, won the best par-five category with its 12th hole, while the 2016 Open venue Royal Troon picked up the best par-three with the eighth hole ‘Postage Stamp’.

The poll, undertaken by VisitScotland, asked golfers to vote for numerous categories which included the best opening and closing golf holes in Scotland.

More than 300 individual holes were nominated for the categories before the were shortlisted by Visit Scotland and voted for by the general public. Malcolm Roughead, the Chief Executive of Visit Scotland, said he was thrilled with the level of participation.

Best Hole – Tom Morris, 18^th at the Old Course, St Andrews (799 votes, 27% share)

Best Opening Hole – The Battery, 1^st at Machrihanish Golf Club (1025 votes, 30% share)

Best Closing Hole – Tom Morris, 18^th at the Old Course, St Andrews (825 votes, 24% share)

Best Par 3 – The Postage Stamp, 8^th at Royal Troon (891 votes, 26% share)

Best Par 4 – Road, 17^th at the Old Course, St Andrews (1176 votes, 36% share)

Best Par 5 – Orrdeal, 12^th at Kingsbarns Golf Club (654 votes, 19% share)

Best View – 9^th at Championship Course, Cruden Bay Golf Club (662 votes, 20% share)
