RYDER CUP: Saturday reaction and Sunday’s singles

Despite a spirited Team Europe fight back it is advantage Team U.S.A going into the final day at Hazeltine.

The hosts are leading 9 ½ – 6 ½ and needing five points to claim the Cup for the first time since 2008, and Davis Love III is planning a strong line-up early doors to try and finish the job.

Every American player has registered at least one point during the first two days of competition while five Europeans have failed to score a point, something they will need to turn around today.

I can’t help but be reminded of ‘Miracle of Medinah’ four years ago and Clarke has used a similar plan, by sending out his big names early on in the singles to try and get some blue on the board.

The first singles match is the one everyone wanted to see with the two hottest players of the tournament so far meeting as Patrick Reed faces Rory McIlroy and there are plenty of other tasty clashes as well:

Speaking after the announcement Clarke said: “We’re going to have to work hard now tomorrow. It’s been done from a worse position but we have a big task ahead of us. These guys are capable of doing it.”

While Masters champion Danny Willett added: “It doesn’t change the job in hand. The job is to win all 12 Sunday. No one is on 14½ yet.”
