The worst part of Muirfield’s decision not to allow female members, from our point of view, is that we weren’t even surprised.
One pleasant surprise was the immediacy and certitude of the R&A’s response to the decision, announcing that Muirfield would no longer be considered as an Open venue until its policy on women is readdressed.
“The Open is one of the world’s great sporting events and going forward we will not stage the Championship at a venue that does not admit women as members,” says R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers. “If the policy at the club should change, we would reconsider Muirfield as a venue in future.”
