Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston not holding out for a Ryder Cup wildcard pick

Andrew Johnston captured the hearts of the golfing world at the Open Championship last month but he is keeping his feet firmly on the floor when it comes to his chances of making Europe’s Ryder Cup Team.

Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Henrik Stenson, Chris Wood, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Andy Sullivan and Matt Fitzpatrick all secured their places with a tournament to spare leaving Captain Darren Clarke with plenty to ponder.

Clarke will confirm his three wildcard picks on August 30th but Johnston isn’t expecting a call amid a tough field.

“I think there are a few people who have played better. That’s the way I see it and I just want to be honest,” Johnston told Today’s Golfer.

“Russell Knox won in the States, Tyrrell Hatton has been playing well. [Shane] Lowry has been playing well in the States too and is quite a gutsy player.

“I want to get in on merit and I’m not playing until Switzerland at the start of the September.

“There is no argument if you get in automatically.

“If I was going to pick the team, it would be [Martin] Kaymer and [Lee] Westwood definitely and another one.”
