Links tips from Gary Player
Last updated:
You don’t win a hat-trick of Open Championship’s without knowing a thing or two about how to negotiate a links golf course in tough conditions, and that’s exactly what Gary Player achieved in his pomp.
The South African claimed the Claret Jug in 1959, 1968 and 1974 so TG decided to tap into his experience.
In a one-on-one interview with the great man, TG Features Writer Kit Alexander asked him what links advice he had for amateur players, and this is what he had to say.
“The worst thing you can do is hit a hard shot into the wind. That’s the most common mistake that amateurs make – to try and hit a full 7-iron into the wind rather than an easy 5-iron.
“Also, when they’re putting in the wind amateurs often don’t stand still enough.
“Finally, you should stop using wedges around the greens and putt it and run it up to take the wind out of play.”
