Spotted on Tour: TaylorMade Spider zero-torque winner on the PGA Tour

TaylorMade debut a prototype zero-torque putter on the PGA Tour at the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational and Puerto Rico Open, and it’s already a winner on Tour. Here’s everything we know so far…

TaylorMade have joined the zero-torque revolution with a TaylorMade Spider zero-torque putter. The putter was spotted on Tour, being used by long-time Spider user Jason Day, and Brian Harman was using this putter when he won the Valero Texas Open. It’s in play for Angel Ayora, who has had the putter in his bag since the Qatar Masters, which was played on the DP World Tour at the beginning of February. TaylorMade’s Spider putters are regarded by many as some of the best putters in the game. Could their zero-torque model boost their reputation?

The official name of the prototype putter is the TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT. It’s pretty apparent the ‘ZT’ stands for zero-torque, and my guess is the ‘5K’ refers to the amount of MOI (Moment of Inertia).

Jason Day was spotted testing the TaylorMade Spider zero-torque putter at the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational. This model features TaylorMade’s Pure Roll face insert, which provides an incredibly soft feel. If it’s the same insert as the one found in the Spider Tour range, it will be crafted from a blend of Surlyn and aluminum and feature grooves angled at 45° for optimal forward roll and better overall roll characteristics.

“On the SAM PuttLab, I had more of a left bias swing path on the Spider putter, and the ZT was a lot more consistent back and forth,” Day told GolfWRX. “I aimed it better, too. It made a massive difference.

“The only thing is, because it was a little heavier, … [the ball] just popped off a little bit different, and I think it gave it a little more energy.

“I kept hitting everything long. But on breaking putts – left to right, right to left – it tested way better than my Spider.

“For many, many years now, I’ve been saying, and to TaylorMade, ‘Look, you guys need to make a putter that when you put it on the ground, on the surface, it doesn’t twist.’

“Now the bottom is completely different than any other Spider. … Essentially, you can put it on the ground, and you’re not twisting it. … When you have it sitting flat on the ground, where it’s just flush to the ground, there’s no chance of it moving.”

The shape is perhaps most similar to the Spider Tour Z, but it’s definitely not a carbon copy of any current Spider models. The silver face section perfectly pairs with the black body to give a very luxurious feel, and the blue sole plate is very refreshing.

There must be a milled element to this putter because ‘MILLED’ is stamped on the sole of the left wing. I imagine the silver face section has been through a milling process, and the Pure Roll insert has been added at a later stage – although that is pure speculation. The shaft enters the center of the putter head – like it does with most zero-torque putters – behind the small alignment aid in the body of the club.
