I tested every 2025 fairway wood and this was the straightest of them all
Last updated:
Want an accurate fairway wood that helps you hit your target more often? We put every 2025 model to the test, and one stood out as the most accurate of them all.
Finding the best fairway wood isn’t easy because we expect these clubs to do a lot. You want a fairway wood that is easy to launch off the deck, gives you a viable second option off the tee, provides good distance, stops quickly on approach shots to par 5s and long par 4s, and, perhaps most importantly, gives you the forgiveness to keep shots in play – because there’s nothing worse than opting for a 3-wood instead of driver off the tee on a tight hole and then still finding trouble.
It’s this challenging combination of demands that makes fairway woods such a love-hate relationship for many golfers. Most tour pros update the rest of their equipment every year or two to benefit from technological advancements, but many will keep a trusty old fairway wood in the bag for years – or even decades.
If you’re in the market for a new fairway wood, we’ve identified the longest fairway woods available here, and on this page we’ll look at the straightest fairway woods of 2025.

How we tested the 2025 fairway woods
- The tester: Our test pro, Neil Wain, played for England as an amateur before turning pro with a +4 handicap. He’s now a highly regarded coach and custom fitter.
- Testing environment: The test was conducted indoors at a state-of-the-art facility under strict conditions, overseen by a former Team GB bio-mechanist, eliminating external factors like wind or temperature.
- Launch monitor: Data was collected using a Foresight GC Quad launch monitor.
- Consistency tracking: We monitored strike location on every shot to ensure no outliers skewed the results.
- Golf ball: All testing was performed using the TaylorMade TP5x golf ball.
- Club settings: Every fairway wood was tested in a 15° loft, using default settings and the same shaft. Clubs that can be set with weight forward or back were tested in both settings.
While we ensured the testing was as consistent as possible, it’s worth noting that metrics like dispersion are influenced by the player’s swing. Even the best players in the world experience variation. So, while this data is valuable, we always recommend trying clubs yourself to see what works best.

The Ping G440 SFT emerged as the straightest fairway wood in our test. With a left-to-right dispersion of just 9.6 yards, it was significantly tighter than the average and more than 40 yards straighter than some models.

Honorable mentions
While the Ping G440 SFT was the clear winner as straightest fairway wood, it won’t be for everyone (as we’ll discuss in a moment). If it’s not the right option for you, here are a few other fairway woods that stood out in testing:
- TaylorMade Qi35 Max: With a dispersion of 9.9 yards, the Qi35 Max was only just pipped to top spot in terms of straightest fairway wood. It should be noted, though, that its 240-yard carry distance was the joint-shortest in the test. It had a higher spin rate than any other model, which could be helpful or problematic, depending on your swing and performance needs.
- Titleist GT3: Ranking third for dispersion, the GT3 also had a solid 251.7-yard carry distance.
- TaylorMade Qi35 Tour: If you’re looking for a balance of distance and accuracy, the Qi35 Tour is a great choice. It delivered a 255.4-yard carry distance with a left-to-right dispersion of under 20 yards.
- Callaway Elyte X: Although its 26-yard dispersion was wider than some, it was the longest fairway wood we tested, and still more accurate than many models. If distance is your priority but you still want a decent amount of accuracy, it’s well worth considering.
Should You Buy the Ping G440 SFT?
First things first, if you’re not aware, ‘SFT’ stands for “straight flight technology”, which is the name Ping give their draw-biased clubs. If you tend to struggle with a slice, this club could be a game-changer. However, if you fight a hook, the Ping G440 MAX fairway wood would be a more neutral option as it offers lots of forgiveness without any draw bias.
The G440 SFT is easy to launch and generated a descent angle of 45° which means it would stop fairly quick if you’re using it to attack a green. Its peak height of 36.3 yards made it one of the highest trajectory fairway woods, which will be good news unless you play a particularly windy course and want to keep the ball down.
Alongside its great performance in the test, the Ping G440 SFT has a large profile, which tends to inspire a lot of confidence at address.
A top performer for amateur golfers

The PING G440 SFT fairway features Straight Flight Technology, to assist golfers in those unwarranted fades and slices. The larger profile and heel-side CG leads to a very high ball flight, and a forgiving club for any type of golfer. Of course, this fairway wood might not be for everyone due to the slight draw bias it beholds, so we’d recommend looking at the G440 MAX if you don’t need help eliminating the slice. As you would expect with this model, the height is coupled with impressive forgiveness across the face, which we always seem to get with any PING model.
What our tester says:
Having a slightly out-to-in swing path, my shot shape does differ from time to time, but I prefer a neutral ball flight with my fairway wood, as It’s predominantly what I use to put myself in a good position off the tee. Sometimes, my miss is right with a bit too much cut spin. The PING G440 SFT made that next to impossible with my swing, which allowed me to swing freely and faster than usual. I’m still not the biggest fan of the acoustics of the new PING range, with other brands such as Callaway and TaylorMade breezing past them in this regard.

Final thoughts
The Ping G440 SFT is a fantastic choice if accuracy is your priority and you benefit from its draw bias. It inspires confidence at address, produces a high ball flight, and our test proved it to be the most accurate 3-wood of 2025. However, if you prioritize maximum distance or prefer a more penetrating flight, one of the other top performers might suit you better.
