PXG Sugar Daddy III Wedges: Here is everything you need to know

Have PXG produced their best wedge to date? We take a look at the new Sugar Daddy III wedge models to explain everything you need to know

As a brand PXG have been one of the industry leaders in wedge design, having made some of the most highly-rated golf wedges on the market. Why is that? Ever since they became the first brand to 100% CNC mill their wedges back in 2017, PXG have produced a level of consistency in their product that is hard to match.

This was the brainchild of Mike Nicolette, a former PGA Tour winner, turned PXG club designer and engineer. He knew that slight inconsistencies could occur from head to head during the production of cast clubs. So to eradicate that PXG started to produce CNC Milled wedges to ensure tighter tolerances, thus giving the golfer a product that is the same from club to club.

The downside to 100% CNC-milled clubs is that they’re expensive. The complex shape of a wedge and how it is milled all add up to a hefty price tag, but this is the price you have to pay for perfection. The look, feel, and performance of the Sugar Daddy III wedges, like the best CNC-milled putters out there, will live up to the investment.

The benefit to CNC Milling however is the consistency and feedback of the product. With the Sugar Daddy II’s it would take PXG over a day from file submission to a completed part. Now that takes merely a few hours from start to finish. The reduction in production time has slightly lowered the RRP of the wedge and has meant the design team could produce numerous prototypes all at the same time.

The PXG 0311 Sugar Daddy III Wedges round out the new GEN7 offerings from PXG. Artfully engineered for versatility and accuracy across all playing conditions, these three-times forged and 100% CNC milled wedges feature three innovative sole designs to allow players to find their ideal fit.

What you need to know about the PXG Sugar Daddy III Milled Wedges

Groove Logic

Wide vs Narrow

Note that on the narrow groove, the ball can only penetrate to a depth of .01147″ while the wider groove, allows for deeper penetration of .01350″. This means the groove edge can engage with the cover of a ball .02″ deeper with a wider style groove giving the golfer more control and consistency with regards to trajectory and spin.

Tighter Spacing

Spacing grooves closer together will potentially allow for one additional groove to engage during the impact with a golf ball providing a more consistent spin rate and launch angle in wet or high grass conditions. In conjunction with our wide groove technology, this new configuration will yield the highest spinning most consistent groove we have ever produced.

PXG Sugar Daddy III Weight Ports

Progressive CG Logic

By removing mass from the lower portion of the clubhead (via variable depth sole ports) and redistributing it to the upper portion of the clubhead (via top surf angle/thickness), the CG will move higher. A higher CG will launch the ball lower with more spin and conversely, a lower CG will launch the ball higher with less spin due to the gearing effect that takes place during impact.

Bounce and Grind options

BP-Grind:

  • The BP-Grind features a Hi-Toe profile head shape coupled with full-face grooves. It has 12° of bounce, a blunt lead edge, and a wider sole with a minimal amount of taper in the heel-toe regions.
  • These variables combine to create the most playable bounce and the most forgiving clubhead within the new wedge offerings.
  • The BP-Grind will be most suited for golfers with a steeper angle of attack or play much of their golf in softer sand and more lush turf conditions.
  • While this grind can be played in a wide-open face scenario, it is best suited for golfers who are not comfortable opening the face to create additional bounce.
PXG Sugar Daddy III Wedge S-Grind

S-Grind:

  • The S-Grind features a classic head profile. It has a moderate sole width, 10° of bounce, and a beveled lead edge combined with a moderate amount of taper in the heel-toe regions.
  • These variables combine to create an extremely versatile wedge that can be used effectively from a wide range of turf and sand conditions.
  • The S-Grind will also accommodate a broad spectrum of swing styles and can be used effectively in the wide-open as well as the shutdown position allowing the golfer to be extremely creative in virtually all situations.
PXG Sugar Daddy III Wedge C-Grind

C-Grind:

  • The C-Grind features a classic head profile with standard-length grooves. It has 7° of bounce, a beveled lead edge, and a more narrow sole width combined with an aggressive amount of taper in the heel-toe regions.
  • These variables combine to create a wedge that can be used effectively from firmer turf and sand conditions and tightly mown areas.
  • The C-Grind is best suited for golfers with a more shallow angle of attack looking for a wedge that allows for the most creative shots around the green.

Bounce/Grind Selection

Various Grass Types:

As a general rule-of-thumb, regardless of the grass type i.e. (Bent, Bermuda, Zoysia, Poa Anna, Rye or Fescue) when the season is such that wet conditions are prevalent, lean towards the BP and S grinds. Once in drier more firm turf conditions, lean towards the S and C grinds.
