Every golfer is covered with this one head as Ping reveal most versatile hybrid ever

Work out which loft best suits your game and understand why Ping have done this. Here’s everything you need to know about the Ping G440 hybrid.

With the 2025 launch season in full swing, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of shiny new drivers and flashy irons, overlooking the groundbreaking work being done in the best golf hybrid category. Hybrids, arguably more popular than ever, now account for nearly a third of all woods sold. While hybrids are a rare sight in the bags of PGA Tour players, they dominate on the LPGA, where 90% of Ping players carry a 4-hybrid, and 60% include a 5-hybrid. Among amateurs, hybrids are nearly ubiquitous, a testament to their versatility and game-changing performance.

JUMP TO:

Ping hybrids have consistently earned praise, and the G440 hybrid continues this legacy, building on everything that made previous generations successful. Designed to appeal to a wide range of skill levels—not just the “typical hybrid player”—the G440 lineup offers models optimized for specific needs. Each loft is engineered to deliver unique ball flight characteristics, from the slightly fade-biased 2-hybrid that excels off the tee to the draw-inducing 5, 6, and 7 hybrids that optimize gapping and performance.

All G440 hybrids share a redesigned, shallower, and thinner face. This shorter, stronger design allows for a thinner face that improves ball speed and produces higher-launching shots that land softly and hold the green. The story of the G440 hybrid family is simple: high launch and versatility from anywhere on the course.

While we’re focusing on the hybrids, here, the G440 family also includes drivers, fairways, and irons, which you can read about at the links below.

Building on the success of the G430, the G440 hybrids have enhanced what made their predecessor so effective. Featuring a multi-material head design (stainless steel, maraging steel, and carbon), the G440 incorporates a redesigned and lighter hosel, resulting in an even lower center of gravity (CG).

So, what does this lower CG achieve? By moving saved weight as low and as far back as possible, Ping say they have optimized the launch and spin characteristics of the G440 hybrids while increasing forgiveness. The result is a hybrid that performs exceptionally well across the board and will appeal to players of all levels.

Ping G440 Hybrid: Key Technology

Ping G440 Hybrid redesigned face structure

Redesigned Face Structure

The goal of the G440 hybrid family is to create clubs that launch the ball effortlessly while offering exceptional control. Achieving this may sound simple, but the design reflects a carefully engineered approach. Travis Milleman, Ping’s Design Engineering Manager, shared insights into their success with the G440. “We’ve managed to combine launch and control, so you can hit it high when needed but still have the ability to flight it down.”

The G440 hybrids feature an 8% shallower face, which encourages golfers to strike higher, resulting in higher launches. Additionally, the more compact head design is designed to enhance the face’s strength, allowing Ping to make it 6% thinner. This new face profile increases ball speed on center strikes and maintains consistent speed on off-center hits, improving overall performance.

Building on the success of previous generations, the face construction retains its proven design. The thin, high-strength maraging steel face wraps into the sole and crown, increasing flexing to generate faster ball speeds, higher launch angles, and longer carries.

Ping G440 Hybrid Free Hosel Technology

Free-Hosel Technology

Thanks to the hard work of Ping’s R&D team, the standout feature of the G440 family is what they’ve coined, Free-Hosel design. This innovative feature, present throughout the woods, involves redistributing mass from the heel of the club to optimize performance.

By removing four grams from the hosel, screw, and heel section across all hybrid lofts, Ping achieved a 12% reduction in CG. They say this works seamlessly with the reduced face height to enhance launch and stopping power without compromising ball speed.

With the launch of the G430, Ping introduced the CarbonFly Wrap, and now, with the G440, they’ve taken weight savings even further. The eight grams saved in the crown, combined with the four grams from the heel, results in the lowest CG ever seen in a Ping hybrid. These advancements should increase ball speed, forgiveness, and MOI while delivering a more satisfying sound at impact.

Contoured Sole Design

The G440 hybrids feature a slimmer back-weight profile, ensuring the club sits flush to the ground while maintaining a consistent face angle regardless of the loft or lie setting. This design allows golfers to take full advantage of the adjustable hosel’s multiple loft and lie options.

“We adjusted the sole design to improve turf interaction, so you get cleaner contact regardless of the lie,” Milleman explained. “Whether you’re in the rough, on the fairway, or hitting off the tee, the hybrids are designed to perform consistently across all lies.”

Extensive Loft Offerings

Each hybrid in the G440 lineup is tailored to golfers of varying skill levels and optimized for its target audience. “We kept the profile more compact to suit the eye of better players, but it’s still forgiving enough for mid-handicappers,Milleman said. This thoughtful approach creates a shape that Ping believe will appeal to a broad range of golfers.

The lineup begins with the 2 hybrid (17°), which is slightly fade-biased and delivers a lower, more penetrating ball flight, making it ideal for off-the-tee performance. The 3 (20°) and 4 (23°) hybrids feature an additional 1° of loft for higher launch, neutral flight, and improved stopping power. Meanwhile, the 5 (26°), 6 (30°), and 7 (34°) hybrids are designed with a slight draw bias and higher launch characteristics to fly straighter and integrate well into an iron set.

“The hybrids integrate seamlessly with the irons and fairways, ensuring proper gapping throughout the set,” Milleman said. With hybrids playing an increasingly significant role at the top of golfers’ bags, Ping’s team prioritized ensuring these clubs could blend effortlessly into a complete set.
