FIRST LOOK: New Ping G440 driver family hits USGA Conforming List
Last updated:
Our first glimpse of the new Ping G440 drivers set to tee off in 2025.
There are three Ping G440 driver heads listed on the USGA Conforming List, replicating what we saw 12 months ago with the G430 MAX, LST, and SFT models. We also expect to see a continuation of the hugely successful G430 MAX 10K, Ping’s most forgiving driver to date, with an MOI exceeding the magical 10,000 g-cm² mark.
Therefore perhaps we may see Ping sacrifice a MOI in this latest lineup for a bump in the ball speed department….we will have to wait and see.
It’s always tricky to glean too much from the limited information posted alongside the largely indistinguishable black-and-white images, but here is what we think we know so far…
First look: Ping G440 drivers
Ping G440 MAX
Lofts: 9 / 10.5 / 12° | Sole: CarbonFly Wrap | Face: Spinsistency
Unlike the previous Ping driver lineups of recent years, the standard MAX model looks set to feature a carbon crown like the MAX 10K model and LST from the G430 family. We also see a three-position rear weight port consistent with previous MAX models so players can dial in their preferred shot shape. The MAX will likely be the most popular of the three new models given its wider target market.
Ping G440 LST
Lofts: 9 / 10.5 | Sole: CarbonFly Wrap | Face: Spinsistency
We expect Ping’s LST driver (low spin technology) to be a strong contender for high-level golfers looking to maximize distance off the tee. Our historical testing of Ping drivers would lead us to believe RPM won’t be as low as some other brands, with the G440 LST sitting at the more forgiving end of the best low spin drivers category.
Ping G440 SFT
Lofts: 9 / 10.5 | Sole: CarbonFly Wrap | Face: Spinsistency
The Ping SFT models have been one of the standout draw-biased drivers of recent times, helping golfers struggling with a slice to straighten up their ball flight. We expect more of the same with 2025’s offering with perhaps a touch more ball speed compared to its predecessor. The model is again listed as having a CarbonFly Warp and three-position weighting system like its siblings.
What is ‘Spinsistency’?
All three new drivers are set to see a return of Ping’s ‘Spinsistency’ face technology which transitioned into Ping’s G430 driver family from the brands’ G425 fairway woods and hybrids in 2021.
Similar to TaylorMade’s Twist Face technology, the face is more ovoid (from sole to crown), rather than a traditional circle with a consistent radius.
It means the lower part of the face has less loft, so shots spin less and go further, yet higher up the face there’s more loft (which means more spin) so shots stay in the air for longer. The idea means extra spin and distance consistency, no matter where on the face you hit it, hence the name ‘Spinsistency’. The result is less difference in launch, spin, and carry distance between low, middle, and high face impacts.
What is the USGA Conforming List?
The USGA’s Equipment Database identifies golf balls and clubs that have been submitted and evaluated for conformance to the Rules of Golf by the United States Golf Association and/or The R&A. It basically means the USGA has approved the equipment for use in competitive golf. For a driver to be listed as conforming, the manufacturer has to submit it to the USGA who then check it meets their rules & specifications. Only once it’s approved by the USGA can players use it in competition.
Manufacturers can sell non-conforming equipment, and some do, but it tends to be pretty niche.
