Phil Mickelson signs new deal after losing a bet at The Open

Phil Mickelson had a small wager with a YouTube star ahead of last year’s Open. Now it’s led to him signing a lucrative new partnership with one of the game’s up-and-coming apparel brands
What started out as a small side bet in a YouTube golf match has ended in a lucrative deal for Phil Mickelson.
The six-time major champion appeared on Grant Horvat’s channel in July and would give his new friend a five-shot head-start. The pair shook hands and, if Mickelson won, Horvat would have had to buy a year’s supply of the golfer’s own coffee brand for a fan. If he lost, he would have to wear a pair of Primo joggers at The Open later that month.
As it turned out, the creator triumphed and Mickelson was good to his word when he bowled up at Royal Troon in a pair of the brand’s trademark joggers.
Now Lefty has decided he wants to wear the brand’s gear full-time – and so will his LIV Golf team.
HyFlyers GC – captained by Mickelson and featuring Brandan Steele, Cameron Tringale and Andy Ogletree – have revealed Primo will be the team’s “official golf apparel sponsor” and will wear their clothing in all competitive rounds at LIV events and major championships.
“I was challenged to wear the Primo joggers at the Open Championship after losing a match against Primo ambassador Grant Horvat,” Mickelson explained. “It turned out to be a game-changer.
“I wasn’t sure I could pull off wearing the cool, fashionable joggers but I have fallen in love with them and the rest of Primo’s outstanding product line.
“I’m excited the HyFlyers will be rocking them during our season.”
Of course, Mickelson announced the news in the only way he knows how…
Primo founder and CEO Matty Gay, meanwhile, said that “partnering with HyFlyers GC is a huge milestone for us”.
He added: “Phil, like Primo, is incredibly passionate about the game of golf, has tremendous achievements in the game, and fits perfectly with our brand. Years of hard work have led us to this point, and we are excited to watch the team compete wearing Primo gear this season.”
Primo’s trademark phrase, “Golfers are Athletes”, allows the brand to create an athletic fit for golfers while also appealing to customers of all sizes. Their headline product, the joggers, come in 40 different size options to allow players from 5-foot-5 to 6-foot-5 find the right fit. In addition to the joggers, Primo offers premium shorts, pants, polos, quarter zips, hoodies, and more.
