Look out, LAB Golf… Everything you need to know as Odyssey launch their most stable putters ever

Odyssey aim to “enter and lead” the zero-torque putter market as they target L.A.B. Golf and PXG with new Square 2 Square line.

“To get a round ball into a round hole, you need a square face,” the presentation boomed as Odyssey revealed the star of their 2025 putter line-up to us during a media launch in Sotogrande, Spain, in October. The Ai-ONE Square 2 Square putter range is destined to challenge the best putters and be a direct rival to L.A.B. Golf and the PXG Allan.

That certainly makes sense. Why are we creating an arc and battling to get the clubhead back to square when, ultimately, putting should be about creating the perfect straight back and straight through pendulum?

Odyssey have previously tried to limit putter twist in the stroke with their Backstryke and Toe-up models, but now they’ll look to chase down the likes of L.A.B. Golf and PXG with a new range for 2025.

Building on the huge success of Ai-ONE, Odyssey are taking the tech from that face insert and putting it into Square 2 Square – a new line of center-shafted, stoke-balanced, zero-torque putters, designed to stay square throughout the stroke.

The idea works by positioning the center of gravity (CG) directly under the shaft axis. This reduces twisting and makes it easier to return the face back to square at impact, with minimal input no matter your stroke type. Effectively, this is as close to straight back and straight through as you can get.

L.A.B. Golf have taken the market by storm with their version of the tech in some standout head shapes, while PXG’s Allan aims to do the same. Both brands have found their way into several of our team’s bags with huge success.

But it’s Tour adoption that really fuels the tech flames and numerous players – including Adam Scott, Byeong Hun An, and Will Zalatoris – have used them on Tour. Little wonder then that golf’s No.1 putter brand has decided to join the part.

Based on early adoption, they’ve found a winning formula because Square 2 Square has already found its way into a host of DP World Tour players’ bags.

Speaking in Sotogrande at the ‘media reveal’ Luke Williams (Senior Director, Product and Brand Management – Putters for Callaway) confirmed that Odyssey have put Square 2 Square through the same ‘Revealer’ process as used by L.A.B. Golf, which shows how much putters twist during the stroke, with results showing that the new models are at least as effective as any of their rivals.

Different shafts for different configurations provide the proper weight and balance to complement the different head weights and lengths that are offered and maintain that central CG location.

Odyssey Ai-ONE Square 2 Square: The tech

Ai-ONE insert

Ai-ONE has enjoyed an incredible 2024 with 50% usage on the global tours, 18 Tour wins, and two Major wins, helping Odyssey secure the No.1 share across every market they compete in. Unsurprisingly then, the Ai-ONE insert is being used in Square 2 Square.

Designed using artificial intelligence, contours on the aluminum back of a White Hot face insert promotes consistent ball speed across the face, along with the White Hot feel that millions of golfers love.

Center-shafted design

The shaft centers CG plane of the putter as it moves, helping to keep it square to the target. It means these putters rest with the toe up in a reverse torque position, opposite of a traditional putter with toe hang.

Built-in forward press

The 3.3° of forward shaft lean pre-sets the hands in a position to eliminate the opening of the face that often happens when a player forward presses on their own.

Unique navy finish

A beautiful navy blue PVD finish adds shelf appeal while the Jailbird models come with black and white Versa alignment. Oversized and overlength grips feature on different models.

When is Odyssey Ai-ONE Square 2 Square available?

Having been announced on November 15, all three models will be available from November 29.

Will there be Cruiser and Broomstick versions?

Odyssey are yet to confirm but we understand 38” Cruiser versions of all three models, and a 48” Broomstick version of the Jailbird will follow early in 2025.

Are any Tour players using Odyssey Ai-ONE Square 2 Square?

Square 2 Square made its Tour debut at the Amgen Irish Open at Royal County Down back in September when Simon Forsstrom put the #7 in play and Jens Dantorp gamed the Double Wide.

Nacho Elvira and Santiago Tarrio then put the Jailbird into play at the BMW PGA Championships, with Gavin Green and David Micheluzzi following suit at the Acciona Open de Espana.

Nicholas Colsaerts and Stephen Gallacher also opted for the Jailbird when they switched into the new line for the FedEx Open de France.

At the time of writing, Square 2 Square’s tournament count stands at 24… and that’s before it officially launched.

We expect to see that number shoot up as we head into 2025 and Odyssey get the models into more players’ hands.

Does Square 2 Square work?

Our testing of the new line has been limited so far, hitting around 40 putts with the Double Wide on the practice green at La Reserva Club during the media launch in Spain, hence us not delving into a full review at this stage. However, based on that session, where I hit putts ranging from a few feet to 100 feet, the design works a treat.

Firstly, if this tech is new to you, then it will take some getting used to. I have quite a pronounced arch in my stroke and while I didn’t use all three models, I did see and hold all three.

The immediate positive over L.A.B. Golf and PXG’s offerings is the familiar look. It’s not controversial to say the other brands’ models aren’t going to win any beauty contests so it makes perfect sense that Odyssey have created the new line in familiar and popular head shapes. I use an Odyssey Tri-Hot 5k Double Wide putter, so to be able to look down and see a familiar shape immediately put me at ease.

What have Odyssey said about Ai-ONE Square 2 Square?

We spent some time with Luke Williams during our visit to Sotogrande, and he gave us the full lowdown on the new line.

Luke, zero torque putters have made plenty of headlines in the last year or two so I guess it was inevitable that the No.1 putter brand would get on board?

“Yeah, but we don’t just want to enter this market, we want to lead it. And we’ve got experience here.

“This is similar to a line of putters we’ve had in the past with Backstryke and Toe Up, in that they balance with the toe up, which is different from traditional putters which typically either come face balanced or with some amount of toe hang.

“When you have a putter that balances with the toe up it puts different forces on the golfer during their stroke and what we find is that it really helps golfers remove the amount of rotation in their stroke because the putter wants to stay square to your path.

“If you’re someone who is looking to rotate the putter less, or maybe you have trouble getting the putter back to square and tend to leave the face open then this can really help because it won’t open as much during your backstroke so you don’t have to close it as much during your through-stroke.”

It feels like common sense that we should always have been trying to hit putts by keeping everything as square as possible, doesn’t it?

“If you were designing a machine to hit putts as consistently as possible you’d want a perfect pendulum. You can’t have a golf club with a 90º lie angle because that’s not conforming – you can’t have a lie angle anything above 80º.

“You have to stand off to the side of the putter so you will have some amount of arch but, in general, if you can reduce the amount of arch and keep the face square to that then it’s an easier way to be more consistent with your putting because it relies less on timing.”

Talk us through the thinking behind these heads?

“We have chosen our three most popular head shapes for the Square 2 Square line – Double Wide as the blade option, then #7 and Jailbird. We’ll have all three in standard lengths at this stage, but we have plans to introduce longer configurations to cover all bases.”

How will the new Square 2 Square lineup stand out from the competition?

“Amongst others that have a similar sort of weight and balance, we offer shapes that we know golfers love and that are proven on Tour.

“We have what we believe to be the best insert in the industry that gives great feel and consistent ball speeds across the face thanks to Ai-ONE. Great reputation, great shapes, great performance, and a unique weighting configuration makes for a pretty special combination.”

Let’s just reflect on 2024, which has been a magnificent year for Odyssey and Ai-One. How do you sum up the success and how do you better that in 2025?

We had a great year with Ai-ONE with tremendous Tour usage and that’s translated to the marketplace, but, much as we would have liked them to, not everyone bought an Ai-ONE or Odyssey putter this year, and putting purchase cycles are longer than any other club in the golfers’ bags so there are still plenty of players out there who haven’t tried an Ai-ONE.

“We have some new shapes and finishes coming there, which will help that grow further, and Square 2 Square is going to draw plenty of attention, too, which we’re very excited about.”
