I tested every 2025 fairway wood and this was the longest of them all

By , Contributing Editor (mainly contributing unwanted sarcasm and iffy golf takes, to be honest)

This fairway wood packs such a punch it was almost 25 yards longer than some of its competitors.

There’s more to choosing the best fairway wood than just distance. You also want one that’s forgiving, easy to hit off the deck, generates enough height to hold a green, and inspires confidence when you put it behind the ball.

But let’s be honest — distance is still a big deal. Whether you’re looking for a powerful option off the tee as a driver alternative or need those extra yards on approach shots to reach par-5s and long par-4s, having a 3-wood that packs a punch can be a game-changer.

That’s why manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries of fairway wood construction, using advanced materials like titanium and carbon fiber while optimizing face thickness and weighting to deliver maximum ball speeds.

The result is fairway woods that fly longer than ever. But which models are the longest? Let’s break it down, because with a 24.9-yard difference between the longest and shortest fairway woods in 2025, your choice matters.

How we tested the 2025 fairway woods

We’re dedicated to making sure our tests are as fair and accurate as possible so you know you can trust the data to influence your buying decisions. Here’s how we tested the 2025 fairway woods:

  • The tester: Our test pro, Neil Wain, played for England as an amateur before turning pro with a +4 handicap. He’s now a highly regarded coach and custom fitter.
  • Testing environment: The test was conducted indoors at a state-of-the-art facility under strict conditions, overseen by a former Team GB bio-mechanist, eliminating external factors like wind or temperature.
  • Launch monitor: Data was collected using a Foresight GC Quad launch monitor.
  • Consistency tracking: We monitored strike location on every shot to ensure no outliers skewed the results.
  • Golf ball: All testing was performed using the TaylorMade TP5x golf ball.
  • Club settings: Every fairway wood was tested in a 15° loft, using default settings and the same shaft. Clubs that can be set with weight forward or back were tested in both settings.

The longest fairway woods of 2025

Several fairway woods delivered impressive distance during testing, each with its own strengths:

  • Wilson DynaPower Carbon: A fantastic option for those who like hitting 3-wood off the tee. Its low launch and low spin produced a powerful and penetrating ball flight, although its shallow descent angle means it won’t stop quickly on approach shots.
  • TaylorMade Qi35 Tour (weight back): This model excelled with a higher spin rate and launch giving it a steeper descent angle, making it ideal for golfers relying on 3-woods for long approaches. It was also one of the straightest fairway woods we tested.
  • Ping G440 LST: A low-spin option that still managed to deliver a good amount of forgiveness. Ranking 4th for overall forgiveness and 3rd for peak height, it’s a great all-rounder.
Callaway Elyte X fairway wood

The longest fairway wood of 2025

However, despite the strong competition, the Callaway Elyte X fairway wood took the crown as the longest fairway wood of 2025. Its average carry distance of 264.9 yards was 3.2 yards longer than any other fairway wood, 13.7 yards longer than the average of all the models tested, and a whopping 24.9 yards longer than the shortest fairway wood.

In fact, when it comes to powerful fairway woods, Callaway are dominant in 2025. Of the 23 models we tested, only three averaged over 260 yards of carry, and two of those were Callaway – in the shape of the Elyte X and standard Elyte model.

So, should you buy the longest fairway wood of 2025?

As I said at the start, there’s more to choosing the best fairway wood than just distance. But the Callaway Elyte X has a lot more going for it than its best-in-test yardage.

It produced a high-draw ball flight, which many amateurs will love. The new step sole and large profile down at address make this a great club to launch off the ground, with launch angle and peak height both above the test average.

Our test pro loved the Callaway Elyte X fairway wood.

What our tester said about the Callaway Elyte X fairway wood

“What an absolute joy it was testing this club. I’m usually a fan of larger fairway woods at address, but I found that the Elyte X gave me my desired ball flight of a baby draw while keeping ball speed at a good level on strikes across the face.

This would be perfect off the tee, but thanks to its forgiveness, it’s versatile enough for any situation. While it may not be the most workable fairway wood, and the slight draw bias might deter players prone to a hook, for most golfers, I’d struggle to recommend anything else.”

What we say:
Say hello to your best-in-class fairway wood of 2025! This may turn a few heads, as the Callaway  Elyte X is right at the top of Callaway’s fairway wood chain, offering the most forgiveness and launch. The profile is a lot different to their Elyte Triple Diamond model, which sits slightly more open than the Elyte X. The Elyte X produced a high draw ball flight. The new step sole and large profile down at address made this a great club to launch off the ground, but the ball speed was very high too. The Callaway Elyte X received the 2nd and 3rd highest ball speeds on individual shots hit, showing that despite the club being pushed towards forgiveness, it packs a punch too.

What our tester says:
What an absolute joy it was testing this club. I am a fan of the larger fairway woods at address, but with the Callaway Elyte X I found that across the face, I was still getting my desired ball flight of a baby draw, whilst keeping the ball speed at an acceptable level to not lose any true distance. This club would be perfect for me to hit off the tee, but due to the forgiveness in play, I think it would be perfect for any situation. It might not be the most workable fairway wood around, and that slight draw bias could put off some players who struggle with a hook, but for the general masses of golfers I’m going to struggle to recommend a fairway wood other than this.
