Jordan Spieth makes shock gear switch

Is this the end of the road for Jordan Spieth and his trusty Scotty Cameron?

Jordan Spieth rarely makes changes to his equipment – especially his putter – so when he does, we take notice.

The story goes that Spieth was fitted into a Scotty Cameron 009 Triple Black putter as a junior golfer in 2009. He used it to win that year’s US Junior Amateur, and then again in 2011 to join Tiger Woods as the only two-time winner of that tournament.

He then won the Masters with it. And the US Open with it. And The Open with it. And 10 other PGA Tour titles with it.

Now, though, it seems the Texan wants a change.

During the first round of the WM Phoenix Open, Spieth was gaming a TP Mills Trad II putter.

In terms of appearance, there isn’t much between the two – both have a raw finish on the blade style head, a plumber neck hosel, and his preferred SuperStroke Zenergy Flatso 1.0.

So what’s the deal?

“I’m just kind of messing with some,” Spieth explained, before adding that he’s looking at how each putter “sits on the ground” while looking for something that is “aligning a little better” and “a little bit smoother” at impact.

“I’m just trying to figure out what helps me stroke it the best, and I’ll use that one,” he concluded.

TP Mills was founded by Truett P Mills Sr in 1963 and is now run by his son, David, who was contacted by Spieth after an introduction by a mutual friend.

“Spieth gave me a call,” Mills told the PGA Tour website. “We probably spent 40 minutes talking. I enjoyed the conversation.

“I explained to him what was unique about that club and why he may have felt it was a little more stable than his other stuff.

“He’s a pretty smart guy, so he kind of understood and he thanked me for it and said he was going to start using it.

“It is always nice to have a good player call you like that.”

Will it stay in Spieth’s bag? Keep an eye on his What’s in the Bag? page to find out…

Jordan Spieth uses a TP Mills Trad II putter, having firmly used a Scotty Cameron Putter for the majority of his career

The TP Mills Trad II putter is somewhat similar to the Scotty Cameron that Jordan Spieth has been using, with carbon material. The putter has a SuperStroke grip and plumber neck hosel.

It's not known if this putter will be in Spieth's bag permanently, but with his putting statistics being a current negative on his game, this may be the change to spur him back to form.
