First Look: Wilson Staff Model RB Utility Iron

Designed by tour players: the new Wilson Staff Model RB Utility Iron promises improved on-course versatility.

Over recent years Wilson has started building quite a following for their premium Staff Model club and golf ball franchise. Some traditionalists would even argue the brand now makes some of the best irons on the market. With, the value of their stock rising the Chicago-based company believes now represents the perfect time to introduce their new Wilson Staff Model RB Utility iron.

Wilson says the RB is designed to offer maximum versatility to above-average speed players between their shortest fairway wood and longest iron. So, expect the model to offer up solutions for long par threes, reachable par fives, and even for hitting a fairway finding stinger when under pressure.

As the RB should generally fall into the hands of decent players Wilson has worked with three-time major champ and Wilson ambassador Padraig Harrington to develop and refine the new RB design. Harrington has previously been a huge fan of the company’s utility irons so he’s more qualified than most to give valuable input and feedback on what sets a winning utility iron apart from the field.

What you need to know about the Wilson Staff RB Utility Iron

As the Wilson Staff Model RB utility iron is designed for decent players you should expect a slimmed-down topline, which Wilson says helps lower the center of gravity to enhance forgiveness and playability. The head’s hollow body construction further optimizes weight distribution as mass is pushed to the perimeter which targets greater ball speed retention when shots don’t impact center face.

Strategically positioned internal ribs (which is where the RB name comes from) improve stability on mishits while also tuning sound to the levels that decent players desire. A high-strength C300 face material (like you’ll find in the Ping i530 irons) is strong but flexible for teaming explosive ball speeds with a soft feel.

Wilson Global General Manager and Vice President of Research and Development Bob Thurman on the Wilson Staff Model RB Utility Iron

“The tour professionals and elite amateur players who tested the new RB iron have all commented on its amazing soft feel at impact and optimized ball flight. We feel we have created something special for golfers in search of that easy-to-hit distance club in the Staff Model franchise that has been so well received by golfers worldwide.”
