Elegance defined: The new 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons are here early

By , Equipment Editor. Passionate about metalwoods. Loves hitting fairways... rarely does.

When you think of Players’ Distance irons, you think TaylorMade. Having ticked the boxes for an array of golfers since 2017, the 5th iteration is no different. Here’s everything you need to know about the new TaylorMade P790 irons.

The Players’ Distance Iron category has been getting more saturated year-on-year, with TaylorMade sitting firmly at the top since 2017. I think we can agree that this iron category attempts to have the most complete package; forgiveness, distance, looks, feel, the list never ends. Although it seems that every brand now has a Players’ Distance Iron, It does seem rather difficult for this iron to be a true 10/10. For the 2025 TaylorMade P790 iron, I wouldn’t be so sure.

The first question I’m sure you’re asking yourself is “Why has it come out early?”

Don’t worry. The TaylorMade P790 irons are still operating on a 2-year release cycle. TaylorMade have decided to push their iron releases (game-improvement as well) to the spring rather than the summer, so expect a new game-improvement iron from them in spring 2026.

At the product launch in California last year, TaylorMade’s engineers were adamant in telling us that the 2025 P790 iron was packed full of tech to make it bigger and better than the last. Going onto the 5th iteration, the R&D Team clearly had a tough job on their hands, with the 2023 model proving to be one of the best Players’ Distance irons ever created. A daunting task, but with some significant tweaks to the tech and aesthetics, we can see the direction they’re going in, and it’s a good one.

“P·790 continues to be a special iron that offers something for a wide array of player demographics. Now in their fifth generation, P·790 irons continue to be a global leader in the Players Distance category. In fact, they created the Players Distance category, and this latest generation continues to lead the way.” Matt Bovee, Global Category Director of Irons and Wedges tells us.

Let’s dive into the looks and tech of the new TaylorMade P790 iron, and why I think this trumps other Players’ Distance irons before even hitting them.

A new attitude

Aesthetically, TaylorMade have modified the design of the P790s based on customer feedback, to provide a different attitude for the iron. The topline has been tightened ever so slightly compared to the 2023 iteration, however, they’ve kept the original ratios in place to keep the look inviting and aspirational.

The design language of the club itself has also changed, with the head now more premium-looking than ever before. The stylish P790 logo has shifted towards the centre (compared to the upper heel in previous models), joining the likes of the TaylorMade P770 and TaylorMade P7CB irons. You can see the tour satin finished along the head in the back bar region, but what stands out is the mirror polish on the head of the club, allowing some contrast and true elegance.

One particular element that I love is the small machine texturing that you can see under the logo. It’s small, it’s the fine details, but as a consumer, these are the elements that you love.

TaylorMade P790 Irons Close Up 2025

It’s all about the turf

The TaylorMade P790 iron suits a range of golfers, from scratch to 20 handicaps. To make the interaction through the turf as optimal as possible for this wide range of golfers, TaylorMade have introduced a sole geometry in 2025 to the P790s for the entire set. Through the longer irons, you will see increased sole curvature from the heel to the toe, which will lead to more consistent turf interactions and a high-impact location on the face, key for optimal launch conditions.

Through the mid and short irons, the leading edge has been modified to become more beveled, whilst progressively changing in size to suit the angle of attack changes with your scoring clubs. As a player, you won’t be able to see this at the playing position, with the leading edge still appearing straight.

Fast forged face

Perhaps the most significant technological advancement in the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons, we are seeing a new material for the forged face this year. A 4340M forged high-speed face is introduced for 2025, being 20% stronger and lighter than the previous iteration. This revolutionary change will lead to more consistency, more forgiveness, and more distance. The sweetspot size is now up to 24% larger compared to the 2023 model (for the 7 iron).

Feel is key

A high-performing iron is not complete without excellent feel at impact with the golf ball, and the R&D team at TaylorMade have made sure to focus on this in 2025.

Paired with SpeedFoam Air, each iron head is individually optimized with modal analysis tools to ensure that the player receives an explosive, premium feel at impact. These tools focus on the frequency of the product when you hit the golf ball, and by focusing on stiffening different areas of the iron head from long to short, TaylorMade can drastically improve the feel for 2025.

Our goal with P·790 irons was to take sound and feel to the next level. We were able to accomplish that through individual head optimization and the stiffening of key internal structures while maintaining the world-class performance P·790 irons are known for“.

CG revolutionized

New for 2025 with FLTD CG, TaylorMade have pushed the CG for the longer irons even lower than before to launch the ball in the air more easily. For the shorter irons, the CG is strategically placed higher, for optimal launch and spin windows.

If you looked inside the heads of these irons, you would see new tungsten positioning. In the long irons, it’s lower to assist the CG placement. When moving up the set to the 7 iron, the tungsten has been placed more towards the toe, improving the stability and MOI.

Worth noting

Alongside the improved gapping for the TaylorMade P790s, we will see a slightly new loft package to really help this element. You’ll mainly see the changes in the shorter and longer irons for gapping purposes, which we’ll list below.
