Callaway sign three-time major champion (but there’s a twist!)

By , News editor and writer. Probably entertainer third.
Andy Murray has been using Callaway golf clubs since retiring from tennis.

It’s tennis legend Andy Murray. That’s the twist.

“I used to play tennis. Now I play golf.” That’s how Andy Murray now describes himself on his various social media platforms.

The three-time Grand Slam champion finally hung up his racquet after bowing out at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, and immediately vowed to get to work on his handicap.

He made his BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am debut at Wentworth a month later alongside fellow Scot Robert MacIntyre and has spent what he describes as “a lot more practice than the normal person” as he attempts to slash his 7-handicap.

Now Murray – the 15th most successful player of the Open Era with 46 titles including two at Wimbledon, a US Open and two Olympic gold medals – will have the help of golf equipment giants Callaway as he continues his quest to master two sports.

The brand say they will “leverage Murray’s influence and passion for the game”, and work with the 37-year-old to “help introduce new and emerging audiences to golf, demonstrating its accessibility, excitement, and the unique challenges the game has which keep seasoned and new golfers striving to learn more”.

“I’ve been playing a lot of golf since I retired from tennis and Callaway have been supporting me with this,” Murray explained. “I was fitted at their European Performance Centre in September and I’ve been using their clubs since then. It’s made a huge difference to my performance already. I’m hoping to reduce my handicap so I’m looking forward to working with them to keep improving my game.”

Chris Gregg, Callaways marketing director for EMEA, added: “Andy’s dedication and competitive mindset have made him one of the most respected athletes in the world and we’re proud to welcome him to the Callaway family.

“His enthusiasm for golf is infectious, and we can’t wait to support him on this journey while creating content that inspires both existing and new golfers alike.”

Hopefully the new gear will help Murray overcome his least favorite shot: the 50-to-80-yard pitch.
