REVEALED: 2023 TaylorMade P-Series irons as used by Woods, McIlroy and Morikawa
Published:
Everything you need to know about the new TaylorMade P7MB, P7MC, and P770 irons, which have been upgraded for 2023 using feedback from Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa.
The TaylorMade P-Series irons have played a critical role in establishing TaylorMade as a credible forged iron brand on tour. Having to satisfy the ball-striking prowess of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood from a single iron family heaped pressure on TaylorMade’s designers, so what they’ve achieved in a few years is quite remarkable.
With the TaylorMade P7MB, P7MC and P770 irons now well past their second birthdays, the time has come for an update, and for inspiration TaylorMade sought the input of former Open Champ Morikawa – the player on TaylorMade’s staff who holds the strongest views about how equipment should look, feel and play, He’s also highly sensitive to the tiniest changes, so designers knew if any new model could seduce the two-time Major winner, they’d be a shoo-in with other players.
TaylorMade take a three-pillar approach to the P-Series irons, with each model having to demonstrate feel, design and performance; any design falling short on any pillar doesn’t make it to market. The new irons have evolved with subtle tweaks and elegant updates. It means the 2023 family feel more desirable than ever.
The three new models join the P790, which TaylorMade updated at the end of last year.

TaylorMade P7MB
RRP: £1,149 | PRE-ORDER NOW
Thanks to direct requests from Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy, the new TaylorMade P7MB boasts a slightly shorter blade length.
There’s a new sole geometry, which is slightly narrower (than the P730), with additional bounce – which is what Morikawa wanted from an iron switch before winning the 2021 Open. That gives a different impact sensation as the club moves through the turf.
As gaze-grabbing as the MBs are, TaylorMade say it will be the lowest-selling model as they’re just so unforgiving for regular golfers.
Precision is paramount when you’re working with the best players, which is exactly why the P7MBs (and P7MCs) come with a CNC-milled face and grooves.
A new back bar shape focuses slightly more mass behind the hitting zone which, along with being forged five times by a 2,000-tonne press (which exerts two-to-three times more pressure than the industry standard), gives a very tight grain structure and great feel. In the design language of muscleback irons, this really is contemporary meets classic.

TaylorMade P7MC
RRP: £1,149 | PRE-ORDER NOW
The TaylorMade P7MC is the iron that’s opened most doors on tour for TaylorMade, so rather than scrapping its winning design and returning to the drawing board for a second generation, the brand have built on its original chassis with some very subtle tweaks.
Expect a slightly longer blade length than the P7MB, with some contouring changes around the hosel and a slightly thinner top; all features which have been driven by tour player feedback.
The P7MC soles are outrageously narrow, while the slight perimeter-weighted design gives just a hint of forgiveness, a feature lots of modern pros want in their irons.
Just like the MB, the MC is five-times forged from 1025 carbon steel. A faceted back bar also allows the model to sit seamlessly alongside the MB as an ultimate players’ combo set-up.

TaylorMade P770
RRP: £1,149 | PRE-ORDER NOW
The original TaylorMade P770 hollow body iron launched in 2020 and sold out within five days, and thanks to pandemic-related component delays it never came fully back into stock globally. So TaylorMade know there’s a huge appetite for this compact chassis players’ iron and this time the company swear they’re better prepared to keep up with demand.
Like the previous model, the new TaylorMade P770 has a forged 4140 steel face and soft 8620 carbon steel body. Inside, there’s SpeedFoam Air to support the face and dampen vibration, while a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket ensures maximum flex for shots hit low on the face.
There’s also up to 46g of tungsten positioned to create a flighted centre of gravity (CG), so the long irons have a CG that’s 1.1mm lower, making them a little easier to launch, while the shorter clubs offer increased control and spin.
TaylorMade say Tiger Woods is a massive fan of his P770 3-iron and, thanks to his input, the 3-6 irons have a fraction less offset than before.
See the P770 model as rinsing performance from a players’ iron chassis and you’ll be absolutely on the money.

TaylorMade’s brand-new custom fitting system for 2023
TaylorMade have ramped up efforts to become golf’s custom fitting kings over the last couple of years and a brand-new SelectFit hosel system for 2023 will let golfers get fitted for loft and lie more easily.
The clever three-sleeve system lets a single iron head offer six degrees of difference in lie angle fitting (from 3° flat to 3° upright), while allowing golfers to trial 1-2° stronger or weaker lofts in a bid to optimise ball flight.
All three irons are available for pre-order now, and at retail from January 20, 2023.
