NEW! Callaway Apex 21 irons and hybrids revealed

Five Callaway Apex 21 irons and two Apex hybrids revealed as brand makes hugely popular family accessible to all golfers for 2021.

Just days after announcing the signing of golf’s World No.2 Jon Rahm, Callaway have revealed another impressive line-up with their new tech-packed Apex 21 irons and hybrids, featuring new A.I-designed faces and Jailbreak A.I. Velocity blades.

The irons line-up, which is £200 cheaper than it Apex 19 predecessor, sees the brand take Apex from its traditional two-model line-up to five models, targeting everyone from the the likes of Rahm and Xander Schauffele to to higher-handicap club golfers.

Apex irons have proved a huge hit ever since Callaway introduced the world to a forged players’ distance model for the first time back in 2014, bridging the gap for players who sat right on the fence between better player and game improver irons.

But with more brands shifting towards multiple-model families to allow golfer’s to mix clubs to create their perfect set, Callaway decided to make the bold move by introducing Apex 21, Apex Pro 21, Apex MB, Apex DCB and Apex TCB.

No new irons line-up would be complete without complementary hybrids. Callaway’s tech-packed Apex 21 and Apex Pro 21 hybrids introduce game-changing innovations and aim to reinforce the brand’s reputation as the No.1 hybrid in golf with all levels of golfer covered across the two models.

Replacing the Apex 19 and Apex Pro 19 hybrids, Callaway have introduced their new AI Designed Flash Face SS21 and new Jailbreak AI Velocity blades into both new offerings of 2021, which come with the tagline “There’s nothing like our best”.

“Apex should be an expression of the best of our iron technology, it’s certainly the kind of iron that defined a new players’ performance category where forging meets technology and it also has to have great finishes and great pride of ownership,” Dr Alan Hocknell, Vice President of Research and Development for Callaway Golf told Today’s Golfer.

“Apex is something we’re really proud of because it allows us to stretch our technology and thinking and to serve an increasingly broad player profile.”

Let’s find out more about the new range, which hits shelves on February 11th.

We’ve seen some stunning musclebacks in our time, but the new Apex MB is an absolute beauty. We love the new satin chrome finish which doesn’t glare in bright sun, and how Callaway have built in a new weight right behind the centre of the face.

It means the model can be swing weighted for different shafts without moving the centre of gravity.

And because great players crave consistency, Callaway say their 20V face grooves help reduce fliers from the rough.

The Apex MB irons are available in 3-PW (an AW is also available) and cost £1,099 (steel) and £1,399 (graphite).

Callaway Apex 21 Pro irons

Callaway have only tentatively dipped their toes into the hollow-body iron pool before, but having watched golfers flock to TaylorMade’s P770, Mizuno’s MP-20 HMB and PXG’s array of hollow models, the new Apex Pro 21 iron plunges them right into the deep end.

A hollow construction means there’s up to 90g of tungsten inside, which Callaway say is massive for this style of compact iron.

Inside there’s also vibration-damping urethane microsphere technology (it’s also in the standard Apex and Apex DCB) which works so well with the 1025 forged body that Callaway say golfers get a feel just like a one-piece model.

Compared to the previous Apex Pro 19, you’ll get more speed, more forgiveness and better spin consistency and feel.

The Apex Pro 21 irons are available in 3-PW (an AW is also available) and cost £1,099 (steel) and £1,399 (graphite).

The Apex iron has killed off the idea that forged irons are just for good players. It’s unfair to label the model as the standard Apex (but it always will be known as that as it doesn’t have MB, TCB, Pro or DCB in the name), as nothing about it is ordinary.

This one targets the broadest range of players. Like the Apex Pro and DCB, each iron’s face within the set has a different AI-designed pattern to boost ball speeds and forgiveness for the typical impact positions of each model’s target user.

Inside, there’s a massive 64g tungsten energy core, five times more than the previous Apex model.

The weight is split between three areas to ensure each iron in the set flights shots correctly. Callaway say golfers will see higher ball speeds, more spin consistency, extra forgiveness and, thanks to better shaping, improved turf interaction, too.

The Apex 21 irons are available in 3-PW (an AW is also available) and cost £1,099 (steel) and £1,399 (graphite).

Callaway Apex DCB irons

As Apex is now Callaway’s flagship iron, they naturally wanted to ensure every golfer has the opportunity to play one.

So where 20 years ago a deep cavity-back forged iron would have been laughed off the course, Callaway say opening the Apex name up to players who need more help is a vital part of their strategy.

The DCB (Deep Cavity Back) has longer blade lengths, wider soles and extra offset to offer more help to golfers who spray shots around the face.

Intentionally, the DCB looks a lot like the standard Apex model, which means teen handicappers and above will have a real decision to make between this and the standard model, but crucially nobody need feel left out.

As with the other models, you get a forged body, an AI designed Flash Face and a tungsten energy core along with urethane microsphere damping inside.

The Apex DCB irons are available in 3-PW (an AW is also available) and cost £1,099 (steel) and £1,399 (graphite).

Callaway Apex TCB Irons

The fifth member of the Apex 21 is the TCB – Tour Cavity Back – which it fits into the set between the MB and the Pro.

The TCB has a similar footprint to the X Forged 18 but uses a 1025 Forged Hollow Body Construction coupled with 17-4 tour tuned face plate and visble MIM tungsten weighting to help maximise performance.

It is a tour-inspired forged players’ cavity back iron that has been specifically designed for tour and elite golfers with lofts, bounces, lengths and COR to suit the stronger player.

New Callaway signing Jon Rahm has always played forged cavity backs, as has Xander Schauffele, so don’t be surprised if they both rock up with a set of these early in 2021.

The Apex TCB irons are available via custom-fit only in 3-PW (an AW is also available) and cost £1,099 (steel) and £1,399 (graphite).

Callaway Apex 21 Hybrid

The new Apex hybrid is a versatile, high-performance, game-improvement club that is designed to blend perfectly with the brand’s Apex and DCB irons.

The high-tech design blends exceptional A.I. ball speed with the brand’s new Jailbreak Velocity Blades into an adjustable, players shape, targeting those who use players’ distance or game-improvement irons.

The Apex 21 uses new Jailbreak A.I. Velocity Blades, engineered to increase vertical stiffness near the sole of the club to create more speed low on the face where players often mishit these clubs.

The Flash Face SS21 features in every Apex hybrid and has been uniquely designed using Artificial Intelligence, placing an even greater emphasis on fast ball speeds from both centre and off-centre strikes.

Callaway have implemented a massive amount of tungsten weighting into each loft, allowing their R&D team to precisely position the Centre of Gravity lower for a higher launch and to provide more forgiveness on off-centre shots.

The Apex hybrids are available in 3H (19º), 4H (21º), 5H (24º) and 6H (27º), priced £249 each.

Callaway Apex Pro 21 Hybrid

The Apex Pro 21 hybrid is far smaller and more compact than the standard Apex model and is designed for Tour players and low handicappers who use hybrids from the tee on par 4s and for versatility on par 5s.

The new model has similar shaping and centre of gravity to the Apex 16 hybrid but incorporates the brand’s new Jailbreak AI velocity blades, which are engineered to increase vertical stiffness near the sole of the club and create more speed low on the face where players often mishit their hybrids.

In turn the blades allow the forged 455 High Strength Face Cup to flex on the crown to promote better spin rate consistency, and the bars are spread to enhance torsional stiffness, leading to more forgiveness all across the AI-designed Flash Face and create the consistent ball speeds players desire.

Callaway expect this to be their No.1 hybrid on Tour this year, with its iron-like design and fixed hosel providing the look highly skilled players prefer to see from their hybrids.

Adjustable sole weights allow engineers to calibrate the club to your exact needs

The Apex Pro 21 hybrids are available in 2H (18º), 3H (20º), 4H (23º) and 5H (26º) and cost £249 each.
