Callaway Mack Daddy CB wedge revealed
Last updated:
The newly-launched Callaway Mack Daddy CB wedge enhances golf short-game forgiveness and provides cavity-back iron users with a seamless step into their shorter clubs.
The new Mack Daddy CB wedge, with its game-improvement cavity back, is designed “to help the guess work out of your short game,” say Callaway.
Available from pitching wedge (48º) right through to lob wedge (60º), the CB sits perfectly alongside cavity back irons, allowing golfers to move from their game-improvement irons into their wedges with ease.

The Mack Daddy CB, with its deep cavity back, perimeter weighting, slightly larger head and thicker topline, aims to combine the confidence provided by a game-improver iron with the control of a wedge.

“Our JAWS wedge and its competitor set are essentially just blade-like wedges,” says Patrick Dawson, Callaway’s R&D manager for putters and wedges.“They’re made for Tour players with the grind options and loft options for the best players.
“That is maybe a little intimidating for a player that already has a set wedge in their bag that they have gotten really good with, but who wants some wedge tech without jumping all the way to a blade-style wedge. That’s where we found an opening in the marketplace for Mack Daddy CB.

“When creating Mack Daddy CB, we looked at those set wedges, so the P, A, S and L that come with the Rogue irons, Mavrik irons, Apex irons.

“The wedges that are in those sets are very specific in that they’ve got some perimeter weighting, some shorter hosels and ok sole bounces, but they don’t have a traditional wedge bounce.
“That provided us with an opportunity to tweak some little things and pick the pieces we wanted to make the best wedge that’s game-improving, forgiving and approachable. Something that someone who is just starting to get better at their wedge game can really jump into without having to go whole hog into something blade-like such as JAWS.”

Shaped by wedge-design legend Roger Cleveland, the two different sole grinds have been created for ultimate short-game consistency.
The full sole, found in the lower lofts (46º-52º), has moderate bounce and is designed to create an iron-like relationship with the turf.

The mid and higher lofted CB wedges (54º-60º) feature a modified W Grind, increasing bounce for added forgiveness from bunkers and thick rough. The low leading edge is designed to help when you need to to play open face shots.

The Mack Daddy CB wedge features Callaway’s renowned JAWS grooves, the sharp edges helping to maximise grip and spin across all lies. Those grooves extend right across the face on the sand and lob wedges (54º-60º), designed to ensure spin wherever you make contact, boosting confidence and commitment in the shot.
“I love that we’ve brought the JAWS grooves to Mack Daddy CB because, in the set wedges, they’re optimised as though they’re irons, so we put in the grooves we need to try and gap appropriately in those sets,” says Dawson.
“Once we get to specific wedges it’s all about control, feel and grind. With these we wanted to provide an option for players who want more control and versatility.”
And it’s not just the clubhead where Callaway have put in the hard work. The men’s CB wedge comes with a new, lighter weight version of the hugely popular KBS HI-REV 2.0 (105g) steel wedge shaft, or an all-new KBS HI-REV G (80g) graphite shaft option.

The Golf Pride Tour Velvet SG-1 grip has been specifically designed for the short game and, at 11.5 inches, is longer than standard to allow you to choke down on the club for shots from awkward lies.
The women’s spec includes an all-new KBS HI-REV G (60g) graphite shaft and a Lamkin Women’s Sonar Grip. The women’s models are an inch shorter and come in lighter than the men’s models.
