FIRST LOOK! New 2021 Callaway Apex MB irons
Last updated:
Stunning 2021 Callaway Apex MB irons bring easy tunability to players’ muscle back clubs with quickly changeable new weight port.
Callaway’s 2021 Apex MB is a classically shaped players’ iron with a narrower sole, a little more height in the toe and less offset than its predecessor.

Forged from 1025 carbon steel, the new Apex MB maintains the classic shape of the previous version but, as is the trend, a brushed clubhead finish has replaced the chrome-plating to help reduce glare.

High performance 20V precision grooves provide control and consistent spin from anywhere on the course and are designed to reduce ‘fliers’ from the rough, but the biggest (and most obvious) development comes in the form of a new circular tungsten weight in the centre of the clubhead.
Where Callaway previously had to stock different weight heads, the new removable weight allows players to make changes to their grip or shaft without the need for fitters to add weight to the hosel, use of lead tape or build an entirely new set in order to sort the centre of gravity or swing weight.

Now the tour fitters and custom-builders can simply tweak the removable back weight to ensure the irons remain to a player’s specs.

“That weight is there because we do a lot of custom builds for these type of irons and players have very exacting specifications so we want to able to handle that in the most elegant way possible,” Dr Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s vice-president of R&D explains.
“Previously we would’ve stocked light, medium and heavy weight heads themselves, which come with their own variations and subtleties.
“Here, we can use the same chassis and modify the weight of the head in a position that is neutral to the centre of gravity so directly behind the centre of the scorelines.
“We can adjust it up and down very precisely to satisfy the different build types without having to pack weight in the heel in a tip weighting strategy.

“It’s just a more precision build and possible to be adjusted by technicians on tour after the head and shaft have been assembled, so another advantage for minor adjustments after testing.”
Callaway Apex Forged MB irons come with either a Project X 10 steel shaft or Mitsubishi MMT graphite shaft as standard and Golf Pride Z grips.
While the Apex MB Irons are not currently available in Europe, TG understands they will be introduced and on sale in the early part of 2021.
European pricing is yet to be announced, but the Apex MB has a US RRP of $185 per club (steel) and $200 (graphite).
