TaylorMade reveal next generation of Milled Grind and Hi Toe wedges

TaylorMade Golf Company have announced the next generation of their Milled Grind and Hi-Toe wedges: The MG2 and Hi-Toe Big Foot

TaylorMade have revealed the second generation of their Milled Grind wedge that features a ‘Raw Face’ design for greater spin, and a game improvement version of the Hi-Toe Wedge that’s built to be easy to play in every condition.

Both wedges, which are available on the 6th of September, have an RRP of £149.

TaylorMade’s new Milled Grind 2 wedges are so spinny, they come with a warning sticker when you buy them! The “Raw Face” design features sharper, deeper and narrower grooves and a sharper radius, with a rougher surface from the laser etching between the grooves, which TaylorMade say will help generate greater greenside spin. 

Compared with plated grooves, the design increases friction by reducing the ability for the ball to skid up the clubface before it grips, enabling a more consistent ball flight with each wedge shot.

Each raw wedge head will get an air-tight adhesive sticker on the face to prevent rusting before use.When you remove the sticker, though, the face will immediately begin oxidising, which in turn, begins a rusting process. TaylorMade’s engineers have also altered the geometry of the clubhead to create a “Thick-Thin” head design using a tool previously only used in their metalwood and irons design processes.

The face thickness has increased from 5.1mm to 6.5mm without adding weight (thanks to a TPU Insert in the back cavity) which creates a solid, positive feel at impact. The use of CNC milling technology, first introduced in the original Milled Grind wedges but more recently in the new P7TW irons, ensures each leading edge and sole grind is ultra-consistent from club to club and grind to grind.

Two sole grinds are available – low effective bounce (LB) provides the least amount of ground resistance and a standard grind (SB) has medium ground resistance.

In addition to the new MG2 wedges, TaylorMade have also announced the launch of the Hi-Toe Big Foot, a game-improvement option that still features an increased toe height upwards of 5mm like the regular Hi-Toe but with a wider sole. 

But while TaylorMade’s HI-TOE wedges have gone down a storm on Tour and in the shops, don’t expect to see the new Big Foot in Rory’s bag.

An ultra-wide sole (32mm compared to traditional wedges which have a sole width of 26mm) makes it easier to use regardless of the conditions, but especially out of bunkers. 

The anti-dig leading edge is blunter and has a bevelled leading edge radius, with maximum bounce of 15°, while the middle is now flatter at 32mm wide and with added bounce towards the toe apex to help golfers with an outside in swing path and tendency for the strike location to be towards the toe.

There is also a slight heel reduction on the to allow for versatility, and Deep CG pockets have been developed to increase spin, flight control and allow for mass to be redistributed to the sole.

“We have one of the best wedge line-ups on the market but realised that there was still one golfer out there that wasn’t catered for, with Big Foot we now have a game improvement wedge that’s easier to play regardless of course conditions, especially for those who struggle out of bunkers. The Hi-Toe Family of wedges now cover every aspect of the game; versatility, playability and game improvement,” says Price.
