Win a day testing TaylorMade’s TP5 balls

We have teamed up with TaylorMade to give you the chance to try the most talked-about balls of 2017, the TP5 and the TP5x.

This is an opportunity for eight golfers to come and try them, learn more about them, get fitted on the range and then play 18 holes with a dozen of the best model for you, before giving feedback for Today’s Golfer on video, on the website and in print.

The event will take place at The Shire London – the only course in the UK designed by Seve Ballasteros – on June 6, 2017.

TaylorMade’s new five-piece ball has taken golf by storm since it was launched in January. It’s been put in play by world No.1 Dustin Johnson, Masters champion Sergio Garcia, Spanish star Jon Rahm, plus Jason Day, Justin Rose and Players champion Si Woo Kim.

Their success, plus months of testing every ball on offer, also persuaded Rory McIlroy to ditch the ball he’d trusted for years in favour of the TP5x.

McIlroy, who recently signed a 14-club deal with TaylorMade, said: “I sort of chickened out a bit with the ball because I just went back to what was familiar (Pro V1x), and I really didn’t give any other golf balls much of a chance.

“I played two tournaments pre and post injury, both at altitude with no wind, and once I got back to sea level at Bay Hill and the Masters and got a little bit of wind, I realised it just wasn’t right, it wasn’t performing for me. I tested quite a few balls and this was the one that I landed on. This is the best ball I’ve hit, ever.”

TaylorMade says the holy grail of ball performance – less spin off the tee, more spin around the green – has been achieved using a five-layer construction, which features a new three-piece “tri-fast” core (delivers maximum energy and expansion on full shots) and a dual-spin cover (lets more of the urethane engage with the grooves on shorter shots).

A softer overall feel for the TP5 means a slight trade-off in distance with both the driver and irons; The slightly firmer TP5x launches higher, but also spins less so there’s reduced drag which means it flies further. It’s no surprise so many of TaylorMade’s players want them.
